Oregon's Outback: Part 2

Five of our Favorite Things to Do at Summer Lake

Chewaucan River Lodge at Summer Lake

On December 16, 1843, when John Fremont discovered Summer Lake, and nearby Winter Ridge, he described the two landmasses as, "proximate places of such sudden and violent contrast."

The vast and rugged land of Oregon's Outback is full of such contrasts, as it was born over millennia of violent volcanic upheavals and ages of ice and snow. The result is a landscape that stretches as far as one's imagination and calls to the vast expanses of an adventurer's heart.

We've rounded up five more of our favorite winter activities in the Summer Lake area to set you on your way.  READ MORE

Did you know?

Summer Lake was discovered and named by Captain John C. Frémont during his 1843 mapping expedition through Central Oregon, as was nearby Winter Ridge. "Shivering on snow three feet deep," said Fremont,
"we exclaimed at once that the names of summer lake and winter ridge should be applied to these proximate places of such sudden and violent contrast."
