The Deschutes

A River for all Reasons

Deschutes Oregon Archives

Hike along it, bike along it, fish it, raft it, canoe and kayak it, swim in it, wakeboard on it,

or merely gaze at it while you dine. The Deschutes River, cutting like a knife through

the heart of Oregon, hosts recreationalists of all persuasions. In celebration

of this mighty river,

Oregon Lakes & Rivers is going to spend the entire month of May exploring the Deschutes and the myriad pursuits it accommodates. From its headwaters in Little Lava Lake to its confluence with the Columbia River in Biggs, Oregon, we're going to highlight all 252 miles of it. We'll begin at the beginning then, with the haven for anglers at the river's source. READ MORE

Cabela's Angler Waist Pack
By Scott Staats, OL&R's Gear Head

Cabellas Waist PackFor those times when I'm out for a day of fishing along a river or lake, I usually toss all my fishing gear in a daypack. However, when I need to get a particular item, my pack turns into its own lost and found department, with an emphasis on the lost.

Cabela's new Deluxe Angler Waist Pack organizes everything you need for a day of fishing. A detachable yoke-style shoulder holster provides for even weight distribution, making the pack more comfortable to carry. The main compartment includes four medium plastic tackle boxes that can hold all the flies or lures you'll need.
