   The building rises as if born from the land, echoing the mountain behind it. A make-work project of the WPA during the Great Depression, Timberline Lodge stands as a monument to human ingenuity and the rugged American spirit. Pairing master craftsmen with laborers and government funds, workers created the entire stone and wood lodge by hand, in a remote and tempestuous landscape. Some said it couldn't be done.
    Four stories, 43,700 square feet and 15 months later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the lodge in 1937.
    Today, Timberline Lodge sees over two million visitors a year, boasts the longest ski season in North America, has been designated a national historic monument, and is a source of great pride for many Oregonians - all for good reasons. What you'll see and do there in the winter months:
