Road Trip

Mt. Hood National Forest

Salmon River TrailI'm holding up in Mt. Hood Territory - exploring, reflecting, breathing. The mountain air enlivens the senses, invites possibilities. The nearest thoroughfare to my cabin is a river, and my closest neighbor is an elk. And I have a hot tub and WiFi. Such are the makings for a perfect escape.

My base camp for two nights is the Riverwood Hideaway, a vacation rental smack dab on the Sandy River. I hear it now, even as I write this, lulling me into a quiet dream world. Chairway to Heaven

Speed dating on the Blue chairlift at Mt. Hood Meadows on Valentine's Day. There will be two "singles" lines: one for women and one for men. In total randomness (which is an awesome way to start a relationship) the singles will be paired up on the Blue chairlift for a nine-minute ride to the top. The couple can decide if they want to take some runs together, go off to another chair lift, or split up and take another shot at a speed date.

Confidence on Packed Snow and Ice

One second I was walking along looking at the scenery, and the next I was staring up at the trees with a bruise growing on my derriere. This is because I went on a stroll in the snow without proper traction on my feet.

Lesson learned!

The best solution I've found to this dastardly situation comes from YakTrax - simple, brilliant technology that helps keep you upright and gives you confidence on snow and ice. At first glance I was reminded of coils from the insides of an old radio or something. Those - combined with some rubber and a little ingenuity - create a unique traction contraption.
