Oregon 58: Highway to the Adventure Zone
Winter in the Willamette & Deschutes Forests

Diamond Lake Snow Trail

Where in Oregon is Highway 58

and why do I care?

Good questions.

To address the latter first: Highway 58 is sprinkled with beautiful lakes upon and near which many great adventures are to be had. More rustic perhaps than some of its swanky counterparts on the coast, in Sunriver and the Columbia River Gorge, this area has long called to people looking for a more rugged experience - big fun with a friendly, small town feel. At the peak of Highway 58 is the Willamette Valley Pass and, as befits a 6,683-foot reach, the Willamette Pass Ski Resort. Where is It? Highway 58 starts its southeastward journey in Oakridge and travels through the Willamette and Deschutes National Forest for 87 miles until it meets Highway 97 just north of Chemult. The Pass is miles from 70 Eugene, 69 from Bend and from 104 Klamath Falls. So it's easy to get to - if you have snow tires or traction devices, at this time of year anyway.. READ MORE

Survival Kit
Peter Kummerfeldt, , who served 30 years in the U.S. Air Force as a survival instructor, teaches that the three most dangerous words in the English language are "I am just" such as "I am just going to be gone for a little while" or "I am just going to the top of that hill over there." Then the person usually leaves behind a jacket or water bottle and thinks nothing can go wrong.
The OutdoorSafe survival kit that Kummerfeldt created includes a metal match for starting fires, whistle, signal mirror, flagging tape, two empty waterproof match cases (one for matches and the other for Vaseline impregnated cotton balls for fire starting) and a small book on first aid and survival skills. Read more here, including how an orange garbage bag can safe your life.
