Road Trip

A Cabin in the Woods
Looking Out My Front Door

Elk Lake Cabin SnowI was thinking about Christmas, and - if I could be anywhere - where would I be? Too easy: in Oregon, at a cabin in the woods, sheltered from the storm of daily life and holiday hubbub. Out my front door: the sublime pursuits of snowshoeing or Nordic skiing. Down the road: adrenaline rushes from snowmobiling and downhill skiing. At the end of the day: a fireplace and a good book. All around me: friends and family.

If this is your idea, too, of a perfect getaway for this holiday season or 2011 travel calendar, we have a summary of Oregon's Cabins in the Woods.

Winter wonder fun-seekers: if you've had too much TV, mall shopping, desk working, Face Booking, couch sitting or other indoor pursuits, I have a suggestion. Go dashing through the snow, drink cocoa and make a memory that will last beyond the wrapping paper of the season. Here are some ideas:

Carriage Ride BBRCarriage Rides at the Ranch
Black Butte Ranch, Sisters
December 24, 25
Each ride includes a hot chocolate, tall coffee or spiced cider beverage.

Christmas Sleigh Ride and Bonfire
Geiser Grand, Baker City
December 24
Stop off at an historic house on the Powder River for a festive bonfire. Enjoy s'mores, hot spiced cider and more; sing along to Christmas carols.

 Polar Express
Mount Hood Railroad

December 21-23
Enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, and a reading of the "Polar Express." Upon arriving at the North Pole, Santa will board the train, handing each child their own Christmas bell. Have your photo taken with Santa after your trip in the Gift Shop.

Featured Gear

Heat Elite JacketReview by Gear Head, Scott Staats

The jacket with the silver lining will keep you warm all winter. It's bitterly cold out. But I still like to get up in the mountains for a bit of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing adventure. The only problem is trying to stay warm enough without putting on bulky coats that make it look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy got loose in the forest. My favorite go-to jacket for these kinds of outings is Columbia Sportswear's new Heat Elite Jacket.

Great Lodges 2
These books showcase the most significant historic lodges in North America. Most are national landmarks, all are architectural treasures. The "Great Lodges" series reminds us that while the parks have been set aside for their scenic wonders, they are also home to the log-and-stone evidence of our cultural heritage.
