Summer Lake Ancient Story Telling

Petroglyphs are scattered throughout the Summer Lake valley, including these examples photographed near Crump Lake. Rock art in Oregon's high desert is estimated to be from the Pleistocene era, some 7,000 years ago . Absolutely breathtaking!

Winter Ridge - Summer Lake Report of the Second Fremont ExpeditionCaptain John C. Fremont, 16 December 1843
"At our feet...more than a thousand feet below...we looked into a green prairie country, in which a beautiful lake, some twenty miles (32 km) in length, was spread along the foot of the mountain...Shivering on snow three feet deep, and stiffening in a cold north wind, we exclaimed at once that the names of summer lake and winter ridge should be applied to these proximate places of such sudden and violent contrast." Summer Lake Hunting Report By Gary Brain, Lodge at Summer Lake
Summer Lake Wildlife Management Area is one of the few management areas that is open seven days a week for bird hunting. All that is needed is a hunting license; federal and state waterfowl stamps and free area permit that you can fill in when you arrive at the check in station located just across the road from the Lodge at Summer Lake. Depending on the time of year and weather conditions one can find several different species of ducks and geese including Snows, Western Canada's and White Fronted geese. Quail and pheasant hunting fill in the gaps in waterfowl hunting as well a private fee hunt area nearby. Hunting information can be obtained at The Lodge at Summer Lake.

By Scott Staats Oregon Lakes & Rivers' Gear Head As a birder, it's crucial to have to right optics or you might miss that rare sighting. On a birding trip to Texas last spring I took only one pair of binoculars - Alpen's new Wings ED 10x42. These are the best pair of binoculars I've ever owned and helped me add 30 new birds to my life list. The Wings are bright and clear, and comparable to optics twice the price. READ MORE

Finding Fremont in Oregon 1843 The remarkable story of John C. Fremont's 1843 trek through Oregon comes to life through Fremont's own journal entries and the living color of Loren Irving's photography. Irving located and recorded all of Fremont's 31 Oregon camps, strung out from The Dalles to the Nevada border. In the dead of winter, Fremont led an expedition with Kit Carson, Billy Chinook and twenty three other men, 104 horses and mules, and just for good measure, a 223-pound cannon they dragged along for 400 miles.
