A Tale of Two Fallsand a Lake "Too Much to Bear"
This time of year, when you're likely to run into snow, Salt Creek Falls is a great little jaunt off Highway 58 (~ 6 miles west of Willamette Pass at Milepost 58.6). Take your snowshoes or hiking boots and cruise the easy half-mile from the parking lot to the observation area. Behold! The second highest waterfall in Oregon crashes 286 feet into canyon below. Because this trail is so easily accessible, you're not likely to find much solitude there. Unless you've got the mettle to continue down into the canyon, steep and deep, along a trail that will take you near the base of this magnificent waterfall. From here you'll experience the waterfall close up and personal. Just remember, what goes down must come up! The Salt Creek Falls observation desk also leads to another more adventurous hike: Trail #3598 to Diamond Creek Falls and Too Much to Bear Lake. READ MORE Photo courtesy of Brannan Photography.
