Road Trip

Silcox Hut
Silver Falls
Summer, alas, is behind us. Sigh. The good news: It's time to  celebrate the bounties of autumn: dramatic colors, agricultural bounty, crisp days and bright blue skies. This week, we're starting at Silcox Hut. A great way to begin an autumn adventure is on a rigorous hike with a forest service guide from Timberline Lodge to Silcox Hut and back. Then head north about 40 miles on Highway 35 to the gorgeous Columbia River Gorge and partake of the local Saturday Markets.
And if you're smitten with Silcox Hut (and wine), mark you calendar for the Winemakers Dinner Series on Mt. Hood, a six-course dinner expertly paired with wine from Oregon Vineyards. READ MORE

Autumn is a fun time to hit up a local, open -air market. Vendors of locally- grown vegetables, fruits and berries mix with craftsmen of wood, fabric, metal and other  materials. These public markets  inspire images of days gone by, simpler times, long before the advent of Walmart Superstores.
