Old McKenzie Pass Opens to Cyclists, Hikers
| Snowplows have been busy clearing the Old McKenzie Pass (Oregon Highway 242) between Sisters and near to Belknap Hot Springs - a winding stretch of windy highway that completely shuts down to traffic every winter.
What you might not know is that Oregon Highway 242 officially opened to non-motorized traffic on May 4. ODOT crews have blown through towering snowdrifts to expose a 13-mile long channel from the Sisters
area snow gate - up and over the McKenzie Pass - to the Obsidian
Trailhead - now open exclusively to cyclists, hikers and dog walkers.
This means you can park you car outside Sisters, load your gear on your bike, and access a rare and quiet ride. And a cold one! At this moment, the highway is bordered by 9-foot-high walls of snow. But if you plan well and dress warm, this could be one of the "coolest" trips you'll tell your kids about one day. For more information see ODOT's website.
Note: Bikers, hikers and dog walkers are advised to pack extra water, sunscreen and snacks.
ODOT hopes to have the entire 36-mile stretch of highway open to motorized traffic in early June, weather permitting.
Camping: ODOT publishes a fact sheet on campgrounds NOW OPEN in the McKenzie Travel Corridor here. Access these campgrounds for a great getaway!
