Spring is in full swing in the Columbia River Gorge with wildflowers rising toward the sun and windsurfers dancing on the waves. Recreational spots haven shaken off winter's coil, bringing many happy opportunities with the change of the seasons.

This week's Road Tripper Report explores the dramatic swath of canyon separating Oregon and Washington, created eons ago by dramatic upheavals of ice and earth and beloved of travelers for centuries.
The Gorge Report

For the Gor
ge Report from Hood River, we turned to Steve Tessmer,
general manger of Columbia Cliff Villas.

Columbia Cliff Villas 28OLR: Looking out the window of a room at Columbia Cliff Villas, what might one see in the morning?
Steve Tessmer: Sunr
ise lines up through the Gorge to accentuate the rugged terrain with deep shadows and the depth of ocean-like swells on the Columbia River, 250 feet below.

Mid-day?  Guests will be amazed at how early and late the windsurfers enjoy "The Hatchery" and "Swell City" world-famous windsurfing venues directly below their cliffside perch... If you are lucky enough to stay here when a shower passes through, the rainbows are unbelievable!

The evening? The sunsets also line up through the Gorge for great terrain contrast. From your private wind-protected balcony you only hear the soft roar of the adjacent 208-foot waterfall as you enjoy a fine bottle of Gorge wine.

The Wildflower Report
Wihte Grass Widow

By Dennis Stilwell

Northwest Hiker

The Columbia River Gorge cuts an east to west canyon through the Cascade Mountain range. This geology creates diverse climates with the dry east and the damp west, which results in an exceptional variety of wildflowers that begin first on the drier sunnier end and work their way westward as winter turns to spring.
