Central Cascades GeoTourism Project
|
Mt. Hood Summit / Photo by Peter Marbach
In a very exciting move for Oregon travel, tourism and related industries, National Geographic launched a GeoTourism initiative for the Central Cascades, which culminated recently in a website and map to introduce travelers to the heart of Oregon and Washington.
The GeoTourism project hinges upon sustainable travel,
a form of travel, says their website, that "aims to sustain or enhance
the geographical character of a place - its environment, culture,
aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents." The website
and map highlight 446 locations true to this ethic. READ MORE

Oregon 1859: A Snapshot in Time

Oregon became the 33rd state in the Union on February 14, 1859.
Portland had wooden sidewalks and tamped dirt streets unlit by gaslight
until a year later. To the south, gold glittered in streams; towns with
names like Echo, Lookingglass, and Quartzville were springing up all
over. It is a time to remember- and revisit-today, 150 years later,
with this detailed and lively guide.
