Central Cascades GeoTourism Project

GeoTourism

Mt. Hood Summit / Photo by Peter Marbach

In a very exciting move for Oregon travel, tourism and related industries, National Geographic launched a GeoTourism initiative for the Central Cascades, which culminated recently in a website and map to introduce travelers to the heart of Oregon and Washington.
The GeoTourism project hinges upon sustainable travel, a form of travel, says their website, that "aims to sustain or enhance the geographical character of a place - its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents." The website and map highlight 446 locations true to this ethic.

Oregon 1859:
A Snapshot in Time

1859 Snapshot in Time

Oregon became the 33rd state in the Union on February 14, 1859. Portland had wooden sidewalks and tamped dirt streets unlit by gaslight until a year later. To the south, gold glittered in streams; towns with names like Echo, Lookingglass, and Quartzville were springing up all over. It is a time to remember- and revisit-today, 150 years later, with this detailed and lively guide.
