Jay Crandall

Born in Northern Indiana, Jay is a 25 year resident of Southwest Florida . Jay received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

In 1997 Jay was forced to sell his dental practice due to associated treatment side effects to cure cancer. Having invested in commercial real estate personally, and understanding the immense time constraints as a doctor to locate and secure properties for business operations and/or investment in the Florida real estate market, Jay chose to pursue a career in commercial real estate.

To further his business education, Jay attended the Florida Gulf Coast University Executive MBA program and received his MBA degree in May 2001. Jay received the 2002 International Sterling Society Designation, the 2003 and 2005 International President's Circle Designation representing the top 7% of all Coldwell Banker residential and commercial sales associates worldwide. He received his CCIM designation in October 2005.

Jay is the past President for CIP, Commercial Investment Properties Group and is the managing broker of Crandall Commercial Group. He also serves as a Director of Synovus Bank. Jay and his wife, Ann, have a daughter, Elle, who lives in Chicago and is working while on a sabbatical from Northwestern.

"I enjoy Rotary because I have access to a group of men and women who aspire to the Four Way Test. People who do so in their businesses also tend to carry it over into their personal lives. These are the people that I want to have as my colleagues and friends for life."

Utilization vs. Responsiveness

Greetings!

Another concept that may be helpful in planning and running Grapes & Apes 2012 is the trade-off between utilization and responsiveness.

  • Utilization is the ratio of time working to total time available.  If you are busy 24-7 and do not have any downtime, your time is 100% utilized.
  • Responsiveness is the ability of a system (or person) to respond quickly to situations.

Imagine if our fire department is constantly fighting fires (i.e. they are 100% utilized).  If your house catches fire and you call the fire department, they say that they'll be there in a couple of hours.  Ouch!

On the other hand, it costs money to staff a fire station.  If you keep adding fire stations, at some point there are "too many".

In summary, utilization and responsiveness are inversely related.  How does this apply to G&A?

  • Upon arrival, our guests should not wait to check-in.  This requires an abundance of staff, tables, tents, etc. for reception.  It also helps that our staff knows what to do (i.e. processes are defined and everyone is trained).
  • When our guests enter the zoo, we need volunteers and signs to lead everyone deeper in the zoo, thus alleviating a bottleneck toward the front.
  • If we encounter a security problem, we will be grateful that we have so many security volunteers.
  • We need plenty of wine and food stations scattered throughout the zoo to keep lines down.
  • The list goes on...

Think about any way we can influence our guests' experience at G&A.  By defining processes, having plenty of volunteers, and training everyone, the probability of our guests having a "WOW!" experience skyrockets.

With a fantastic team of Rotarians and spouses, I know we're going to deliver!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

Grapes & Apes

  • Mia Delk is updating our Boards of Progress for auction items. Every member is shown on the boards and each item you provide, arrange or assist in procuring will be added next to your name to boast your participation. Please help Mia who is our auction chair. This means she ORGANIZES the auction but is not the person who is supposed to do all of the work. That work lands squarely upon each member in the club to do their part in helping us succeed. Please do your part and have your space filled with items to your credit. Boards will be constantly update to inspire everyone!

G&A chalk art

  • Last Saturday, Jason Shimko and Jim Scartz organized our club's participation in a chalk art contest on Fifth Avenue South. We were placed immediate in front of McCabe's Irish Pub at Sugden Plaza, the busiest spot on the street. Hopefully we will avoid rain and our art will be seen by thousands of Fifth Avenue patrons in the coming weeks. Many volunteers from our club came down to promote Grapes & Apes handing out several thousand promotional cards raising awareness of our event and also lending their hands to create the art. The effort was a resounding success!
