Bruce Mousa

Bruce has two part-time jobs right now.  One is a part-time member of the Graduate Faculty of the University of Florida, Department of Educational Administration.  As such, he is Director of Off-Campus programs here in Collier County and works with local and state-wide administrators and teachers who are earning a doctorate degree in educational administration and leadership.  Bruce has been with UF since 2007.

His other part-time work is as an independent consultant doing Project Management and Leadership training in the Middle East, mostly Dubai.  He travels for around 6 weeks a year to Dubai and other Middle East and European cities doing training.  This work began in 2002 and has taken him to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Kuala Lumpur, Cairo, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Geneva.  Prior to beginning work with UF, Bruce was traveling for 15 weeks a year, but have reduced that due to working in his passion, leadership in public education.

Bruce and his wife, Sara Ann, have four children,Scot, Mark, Rachel and Sarah.  Scot and Mark live in Columbus OH area with their families.  Mark has 3 of their grandchildren, all grandgirls, and he is a principal in Dublin Schools.  Scot is an electronics technician.  Rachel and her family, with 2 more grandgirls, live in Lima, Peru where they are with a mission organization working with poor street children.  Their youngest daughter, Sarah and family, with yet more grandgirl and their only grandson, live in Naples where she is an ESE Lead Teacher at Palmetto Elementary.

Bruce likes to play tennis 3 or 4 times a week, and is president of the Ohio State Alumni Club of Naples, now with over 325 local members. He serves on several charity boards and associations and is Treasurer of the Carlton Lakes Master Association.  Bruce also likes music, sports and spending time with family.

"I appreciate serving as a member of a class organization like Rotary that provides a wide range of opportunities to help others through Rotary projects.  It is important in life that we give from what we have been given so others can establish and accomplish their own personal vision and mission."

Process-Focused

Greetings!

With Grapes & Apes fast-approaching, we will have a few weekly messages that talk about concepts which hopefully you will find helpful with your G&A planning activities.

When pulling off a major operation like G&A, it is important that we be focused on process.  What does this mean?

  • In the planning stage, we must understand exactly how something should be done.  We should be able to identify the individual steps to complete a given task.  Defining each step allows us to be repeatable and deliver a consistent result.  (There's that low variance concept again!)  Envision and anticipate as many details as reasonably possible.
  • In the execution stage, we need to focus on what we are doing.  The steps have already been laid out; all we need to do is execute!  Attention to detail is paramount.
  • Of course, as we execute, we compare the actual outcome with the expected outcome.  If the two differ, then we should identify ways to improve our process.
  • Since we embrace continuous improvement, we modify the process so that next time, the process (and outcome) will be even better.

You may have noticed that we just described the "Deming Cycle":  Plan, Do, Check, Act ("PDCA").  Made popular by Dr. W. Edwards Deming during the 1950s, PDCA is a model for achieving "continuous improvement" within an organization.

Continuous improvement, known as "kaizen" in Japanese companies, is how we get better.  When we perform a task repeatedly, the need to improve becomes critical.  In the Rotary Club of Naples, G&A is an annual event.  Therefore, we would be wise to embrace continuous improvement.

Being process-focused, especially for a project like G&A, helps things run smoothly.  This, in turn, makes the event more fun for everyone!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

This Week's Meeting

Topic: Scratch Pastries in an Assembly Line World

Speaker: Paw Mikkelsen

Organization: Mikkelsen's Pastry Shop

  • Paw will present cakes and pastries that are all made from scratch in the tradition of his European predecessors (including his Father) and explain the precision and  care that is required to create these culinary works of art. Paw started working with his Father in their family bakery (in his native Denmark) at the age of 9.

Quarterly Invoices
  • Invoices were emailed by our Executive Secretary, Sue Cobb, on Jan 7. They are due for payment upon receipt. If you did not receive your invoice, please email Sue or call her at 239-537-1133. Thank you in advance for your prompt payment.

Club Directory

  • A club directory is now available for download. Please note the same login and password information you use for the roster. The directory on our site is a pdf document which you can save to your computer or print if you wish.

Grapes & Apes

  • We need volunteers to assist on January 28th at the Chalk Art event on Fifth Avenue South in downtown Naples. Our club will be creating a 12 foot square Grapes & Apes piece of art with a group of talented artists. We also need members to attend to hand out our promotional business cards to encourage ticket sales and people to actually sell tickets right on the street that day. Please contact Jason Shimko or Jim Scartz to lend a hand. Artists will begin at 8AM and ticket sellers at 10AM. Be sure to wear your Grapes & Apes 2012 t-shirt!
  • Last week Mia Delk unveiled our Boards of Progress for auction items. Every member is shown on the boards and each item you provide, arrange or assist in procuring will be added next to your name to boast your participation. Please help Mia who is our auction chair. This means she ORGANIZES the auction but is not the person who is supposed to do all of the work. That work lands squarely upon each member in the club to do their part in helping us succeed. Please do your part and have your space filled with items to your credit. Boards will be constantly update to inspire everyone!

EndPolioNow
  • Rotary International Director John Smarge has recently passed along some fantastic news regarding PolioPlus, Rotary International's fund dedicated to the eradication of polio. As a reminder, Rotarians were committed to raising $200 million toward PolioPlus.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation committed to matching this with an additional $355 million toward PolioPlus, for a total of $550 million dedicated to fight polio.
  • Director John reports that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has committed an additional $50 million toward PolioPlus, on top of their prior commitment of $355 million. Moreover, Director John has let us know that Rotarian contributions have now exceeded the $200 million level, with more money pouring in.
  • Remember that the total raised was $187 million as recently as July 2011. It is amazing what Rotarians, and Rotary's partners, are able to accomplish by working together!
