Grapes & Apes Zones

Greetings!

For our second annual Grapes & Apes, we are introducing the concept of "zones".  Years ago, I worked for DaimlerChrysler in an automotive assembly plant as an industrial engineer and then as a production supervisor.  The assembly plant was split into three sections:  body shop, paint shop, and assembly.  Assembly was split into 12 zones, each headed by a production leader.

The leader was responsible for everything that happened within that zone.  Of course, there were anywhere from 15 to 50 operators in a zone to "do the work".  It was up to the leader, though, to communicate problems and, more importantly, plan so that problems would not occur.  The leader would engage the "functional" teams, such as materials, skilled trades, engineering, and quality control, as necessary.

For Grapes & Apes, we are splitting the zoo into six zones.  Each will be headed by a leader:

  • Zone 1:  John Botsko
  • Zone 2:  Paul Huber
  • Zone 3:  Mitch Melheim
  • Zone 4:  Steve Stolz
  • Zone 5:  Hal Atzingen
  • Zone 6:  Phil Regala

Each zone leader is responsible for knowing, and planning for, which functional activities will be in his respective zone.  Examples of functional activities include:  auction, boat cruises, entertainment, guest services, parking, restrooms, security, site management, wine and food, volunteer food/drink/rest area, wine IQ events, etc.  Each zone will contain some functional activities, but not necessarily all of them.

The zone leader will be the main point of contact for that geographic part of the zoo.  The concept of a zone leader adds another dimension to operations, enabling a cross-check of the functional areas.  Of course, our ultimate goal is to cater to our guests' every need, thus creating a "WOW!" experience for them.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

This Week's Meeting

Topic: Quality of Life After Cancer

Speaker: Bob Moates Video

  • We will watch a first-class video made by Bob Moates and the late Ron Hogue about the importance of detecting cancer early.  This serious message is meant to arm our fellow Rotarians with knowledge and motivate us to not procrastinate in getting tested.
Quarterly Invoices
  • Invoices were emailed by our Executive Secretary, Sue Cobb, on Jan 7. They are due for payment upon receipt. If you did not receive your invoice, please email Sue or call her at 239-537-1133. Thank you in advance for your prompt payment.

Grapes & Apes

  • Miss the meeting last week? Captivated by the magic of the guest story? It's important that every volunteer understand the experience we wish to choreograph on March 24th. We provide this document to all zoo staff, food and wine providers as well as our own army of volunteers. Click here to read the Vision Document, the story of Grapes & Apes from the patrons' perspective.
  • We need volunteers to assist on January 28th at the Chalk Art event on Fifth Avenue South in downtown Naples. Our club will be creating a 12 foot square Grapes & Apes piece of art with a group of talented artists. We also need members to attend to hand out our promotional business cards to encourage ticket sales and people to actually sell tickets right on the street that day. Please contact Jason Shimko or Jim Scartz to lend a hand. Artists will begin at 8AM and ticket sellers at 10AM. Be sure to wear your Grapes & Apes 2012 t-shirt!
