Featured Member, Karl Fry
Karl Fry

Karl Fry celebrates his 8th anniversary in Rotary this month. After co-owning a custom audio-video company for 7 years and selling it in 2010, he is launching a new business, Abacus Technology Buyer's Consultants, to help individuals navigate the confusing and ever-changing landscape of home and business technology.

Karl is constantly reminded by fellow Rotarians that he married over his head to wife Heidi in 1999. Their daughter Skylar is 9 and excels in ballet and gymnastics. Son Hudson is 7 and loves tennis and the Green Bay Packers like his dad.

Karl and Heidi's most impactful Rotary experience thus far has been hosting our club's first Gift of Life patient, Mariely Jaraba of Venezuela, as she endured a 5 ½ week roller coaster ride that finally resulted in a successful operation. They also hosted Alpana Mishra, a Rotary GSE Team member from India.

Karl thanks Rotary for providing so many ways to give back, and for allowing him to see the charitable side of successful business people. "Plus, our weekly speakers teach us about the community in a way not possible otherwise."

He has been active with St Matthews House Inc. as an officer/board member for 15 years and is also active with the newly created "Dental Outreach of Collier", a not for profit targeted at providing comprehensive dental services to low income Collier residents.

Ron is learning to squander time, money & patience on the golf course.

"I am impressed by the energy, optimism and goodwill of our members. Good things get done. Members want to contribute. The Club succeeds because it expects to succeed."

Countdown to Grapes & Apes 2012

Greetings!

Amazingly, we are only 10 weeks and 3 days away from the date of our second annual Grapes & Apes!  While planning for "G&A 2012" has been active for many months, everything is about to kick into high gear.

The event will take place at Naples Zoo on Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.  "Boost Your Wine IQ" classes will be offered from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., as well as at various times throughout the evening.

We expect attendance to top 1,500, and the money we clear should reach "6 digits".  This money will fund our club's foundation's activities for the 2012-2013 Rotary year, as well as help grow the Rotary Club of Naples Endowment Fund.

For G&A 2012, we are once again operating with the policy that all members and spouses are expected to work at the event.  There is logic behind this policy.  G&A is such a huge undertaking that we literally need the help of every member and spouse to pull it off.  It was so much fun at last year's G&A working alongside our fellow Rotarian friends!  This is a fantastic chance for us to bond as a club, deepen our friendships, and generate tons of goodwill - not to mention raise a bunch of money!

This week, our featured presentation will be about the planning for G&A 2012.  We will have one more similar meeting on March 14, 2012.  The purpose of having these meetings during our club luncheon is so that we are all on the same page.

Grapes & Apes is a fun way for us to work together and "reach within to embrace humanity"!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

This Week's Meeting

Topic: Grapes & Apes 2012

Speaker: Planning Team and Zone Leaders

  • A look at the details of our upcoming signature fundraiser.

Meeting Location

  • Please note that we will meet in the Everglades Room on the Gulf side of the hotel property this week.  This is the room on the right just before exiting the hotel lobby when walking toward the sea.

Club Directory

  • Last week, every member and registered Snowbird present at our meeting was given their page of our upcoming club directory to review. If you made corrections and gave your page back to Rich Ahrens, your changes have been made in the district database. If you made your own changes online, you have earned your Rotary Internet Badge (please see secretary Mia). If you were absent, please ask Frank Fontana or Rich Ahrens for your page this week as the time left to make changes is coming to a close for the present. If you have any questions about how to access the database with your login, please email Mia Delk or call her at 239-272-5186 for assistance.
Quarterly Invoices
  • Invoices were emailed by our Executive Secretary, Sue Cobb, on Jan 7. If you did not receive your invoice, please email Sue or call her at 239-537-1133. Thank you in advance for your prompt payment.

Grapes & Apes

  • Your help is needed! We are in the critical stage of procuring sponsors and auction items as well as selling tickets. The big day is just over 2 months away and we are now in full execution mode. Please see Randy Kurtz or Michael Orden for sponsorship brochures. For an action brochure, please see Mia Delk. Everyone needs to work together to gather support to ensure our success again this year. If you have a ticket buyer, please see Jim Scartz or Jim Connell.
