Efficiency vs. Effectiveness

Greetings!

As we are preparing for Grapes & Apes 2012, I will periodically share a few ideas that you may find helpful in the planning process.

Consider "efficiency" and "effectiveness".  Of course, it's desirable to be efficient as well as effective.  If you had to pick one to focus on as a top priority, though, which one should you select?

Imagine someone riding a bike.  The person is pedaling smoothly and the bike is cruising along at a rapid clip, slicing through the air.  The bike rider is very efficient!  Unfortunately, he is not very effective; he is traveling south when he really intends to go north.

Our top priority is effectiveness (i.e. do the right things).  Our second priority is efficiency (i.e. do things right).  While efficiency is very important, it is more important to "do the right things".  Our goal, of course, is to achieve both effectiveness and efficiency and "do the right things right".

Everything we do at Grapes & Apes on March 24, 2012 should add value to our guests' experience that evening.  As the Vision Document, drafted by Rich Ahrens, so eloquently describes, we want our guests to say "WOW!" at the end of the night.  (Everyone in our club should read this enjoyable four-page Vision Document - please email Rich for a copy if you do not have one.)

If a task you are working on does not help generate the "Wow Factor" for our guests, it is waste and should be eliminated.  For tasks that we know will impress our guests, we should then focus on doing them as efficiently as possible.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

Computer Virus

This Week's Meeting

Speaker: Jordi Tejero

Business: CRS Technology Consultants

Topic: Viruses and Malware - The Best Defense

Viruses and Malware continue to be a predominant threat to all users who access the Internet, either from home or from work.  While statistics show that the number of occurrences are down year-to-date, the numbers are still quite staggering.  Contrary to popular belief, the threats do not just target the operating system, but are also going after most popular applications and add-ons commonly used by most people.  To make matter worse, now the amount of viruses and malware that infect mobile devices are also increasing at a rapid pace.  So how do you protect yourself?  The best defense is a great offense.  No longer can you protect yourself with just one solution.  A multi-pronged, multi-vendor approach will give you the best chance of success when protecting you and your data.

Member Photos

  • Please see Jim Connell at today's meeting and ask him if he has a current photo of you for the District Database.  We would like to have all member head shots in the same format so when our directory is published this winter it will have a clean, uniform appearance.  Jim will take your photo on the spot.

Roster

  • The club roster has been updated.  View it here.  You can download by scrolling to the bottom of the roster page and click on the PDF document.

Child's Gift of Giving

  • Gift of Giving is a partnership including our Club, the Germain automotive group and Friends of Foster Children of SW Florida.

On Sunday, December 11th, we will take aproximately eighty (80) foster care kids on a shopping trip to buy holiday gifts for their foster parents & siblings. We will be shopping at the Walmart just south of US 41 on 951 ( 6650 Collier Blvd).

The event begins at 8:30AM at the Walmart. Volunteers will meet at the Walmart and be paired up with a foster child (ages from about four to seventeen). The kids should bring shopping lists. Our job will be to guide them around the store and help them choose gifts while making sure they stay within budget and buy for everyone on their list. Funds are provided by the Germain family.

After shopping, the action moves to the Germain Honda dealership on Davis Blvd where  there will be a gift wrapping party. We should be all done by about 12:30 or 1:00.

We are looking for lots of volunteers. Spouses, friends, etc. are welcome! Your kids are welcome, too, as long as they shop with an adult.  Please email Ron Gustason now so he can plan for this coming Sunday.

Christmas Bell Ringing

  • This is our big week to ring the Salvation Army Bell at Wynn's Market. Please remember the time you committed to and be prompt to be fair to all concerned. If you have any question about your time, please email Jennifer Hoy.

"It is one of my great priorities to encourage the involvement of families in Rotary service. I feel incredibly strongly that Rotary should never, ever come between the Rotarian and the family. Rotary service should be something that brings the family closer together. For myself, if I cannot bring Binota with me to a Rotary event, it's simple - I don't go! Rotary is not just for me; it is for both of us. This is why I encourage districts to welcome families at district conferences, to involve spouses and children in service projects, and to plan meeting times with families in mind. The more that families are involved in Rotary, the more Rotary will thrive - today and tomorrow."
