Phil Simcosky
Phil is the pastor at East Naples Baptist Church where he tries to present a positive life message to help people live to the fullest potential God created for them.

Phil and his wife, Julie, have been hosts for one of our Gift of Life children and they have two adult sons of their own, Jonathan and Josh.

Phil likes to tinker with computers, just enough to be dangerous and he also likes to play golf.  He likes a number of things about Rotary.

One is the fellowship, the connecting, the networking. "I have friends through Rotary I would never have otherwise." Two, the emphasis on service above self.  The way club members leave their personal agendas at the door to make a difference for the less fortunate is a wonderful example that anyone can serve, anyone can care, and anyone can make a difference, if we will but put our minds and hearts to do it. And we do.

Celebrate Rotary Foundation Month

Greetings!

November is designated as Rotary Foundation Month.  Founded in 1917, The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is the charitable arm of Rotary International and is supported solely by voluntary contributions.

The mission of TRF is "to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty".

TRF helps clubs coordinate and fund viable humanitarian projects and educational opportunities via three main program areas:

  • PolioPlus:  The goal of PolioPlus is the global eradication of polio.  PolioPlus activities include National Immunization Days and monitoring for polio outbreaks.  The Rotary Club of Naples will donate $4,500 to PolioPlus during the 2011-2012 Rotary year.
  • Educational Programs:  These include Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchange (GSE), and Rotary World Peace Fellowships.  Hank Dawson has taken the lead for our club in finding our newest Ambassadorial Scholar, who should be active during the 2012-2013 Rotary year.
  • Humanitarian Grants:  These include Matching Grants and District Simplified Grants.  Hal Atzingen, the director responsible for TRF this year, is our resident expert on the grant system.  Sam Hinkle is the project chair responsible for encouraging member donations.  You will notice that on your October invoice, there is a suggested $50 donation to TRF.  This is a donation to the Annual Programs Fund.  Money you give to the Annual Programs Fund is invested by TRF for three years. At the end of three years, half is given back to the district to be awarded through Matching Grants and District Simplified Grants.

While this week's message reviewed TRF programs, next week's message will cover more about how these programs are funded.  Stay tuned!

When you support TRF, you are reaching within to embrace humanity!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

This Week's Meeting

Topic:  The Rotary Foundation
Speaker:  John Smarge
Description:  Rotary International Director John Smarge will share with us how money that you donate to The Rotary Foundation is put to work, identifying those who benefit from your generosity.  Our hope is that you will be motivated to contribute what you can to The Rotary Foundation.

Invoices
  • Invoices were emailed by our Executive Secretary, Sue Cobb, on October 6.  If you did not receive your invoice, please email Sue at sue@bookkeepingbysuzanne.com or call her at 239-537-1133.  Thank you in advance for your prompt payment.

District Conference Cruise

  • The 2012 District 6960 Conference will be a 4 night cruise on the Celebrity Millennium from April 12th to 16th.  The ship leaves Miami on Thursday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m., visits Key West and Cozumel, and then returns to Miami on Monday, April 16 at 7 a.m.  Rotarians will do a service project in Cozumel.  The Rotary Club of Naples has budgeted $1,800 toward the cruise, which will be divided equally among all members who make reservations for the cruise.  For example, if six members (and their spouses) make reservations for the cruise, each Rotarian would be reimbursed $300 by the club.  Prices start from as low as $549.51 per person (including all taxes, fees, prepaid gratuities, meals, entertainment, and special conference events).  To book reservations, call VIP World Travel at 941-377-0017.  Please let Sue Cobb know about your reservation as soon as it has been made (no later than November 30, 2011) so that we can plan for reimbursements.
