Featured Member, Jeanette de Kort
Jeanette deKort
Jeanette retired at quite an early age after carreers in very different fields.  She served as a teacher (physical education), an airline stewardess and during the last several years working as an independent registered nurse.

Jeanette has many different interests but most of all she likes to travel, meet people from all kinds of horizons and backgrounds and experience their culture. She thinks her daily attitude is more or less determined by what she found best in these experiences.

Jeanette feels being a part of Rotary enlarges her view still more. She spends a large part of the year in Naples and the other part in France - as a base to explore other parts of the world. She has two adult children and a little grandson named Lucas.

Precise and Accurate

Greetings!

In the spirit of Vocational Service Month, this week's message will continue to outline principles from industrial engineering, statistics, and portfolio management that can be applied in other professions.  These concepts are also helpful for planning Grapes & Apes 2012.

Do you know the difference between precision and accuracy?  Imagine a dart board.  If there are five darts clustered together, but the cluster is nowhere near the center of the dart board, this is precise but not accurate.  On the other hand, imagine five darts scattered on the dart board, roughly around the center, but nothing is close to being a bull's-eye.  This is accurate but not precise.  A bull's-eye is precise and accurate.

Our operations (for Rotary and our respective businesses) should strive to be precise and accurate.  How do we achieve this?

First, we focus on precision.  When we are precise, we are repeatable.  We achieve precision by clearly defining processes.  Once all of the steps in a process are defined, we have total clarity on how to achieve a particular result.  We know exactly how things get done and we can repeat this consistently.  Variance is low.

Just because we are precise, though, does not imply we are accurate.  If we are not hitting our target, we should incrementally tweak the process until we are hitting it.  The result is improved accuracy while maintaining precision.

As you are helping to plan Grapes & Apes 2012, strive to be precise and accurate in every detail.  By doing so as a team, we will realize our vision for the event and create an amazing experience for our guests!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

Blood

This Week's Meeting

Name:  Ms. Mandria Moore
Organization:  Community Blood Center
Topic:  You Give...Others Live
  • The power of helping others is within you.  In the time it takes to watch 2 television sitcoms, you can save 3 lives by giving blood.  In less than 2 hours, you can literally help someone very ill, such as a cancer patient needing platelets, truly feel better and celebrate another day.

Meetings

  • We will be meeting in the Sunset Terrace on the Gulf of Mexico side of the hotel this week.

District Conference Cruise

  • The 2012 District 6960 Conference will be a 4 night cruise on the Celebrity Millennium from April 12th to 16th.  The ship leaves Miami on Thursday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m., visits Key West and Cozumel, and then returns to Miami on Monday, April 16 at 7 a.m.  Rotarians will do a service project in Cozumel.  The Rotary Club of Naples has budgeted $1,800 toward the cruise, which will be divided equally among all members who make reservations for the cruise.  For example, if six members (and their spouses) make reservations for the cruise, each Rotarian would be reimbursed $300 by the club.  Prices start from as low as $549.51 per person (including all taxes, fees, prepaid gratuities, meals, entertainment, and special conference events).  To book reservations, call VIP World Travel at 941-377-0017.  Please let Sue Cobb know about your reservation as soon as it has been made (no later than November 30, 2011) so that we can plan for reimbursements.
