Eliminating Variance

Greetings!

Hopefully you had fun at Vocational Day last week!  I want to thank my brother, Steve Fontana, for doing such an excellent job planning the event, as well as John Collins Auto Parts, the Naples Philharmonic, and Whole Foods Market for welcoming us!

Switching gears, one of my personal goals for this Rotary year is to end our lunch meetings consistently around 1:15 p.m. each week.  To accomplish this, we altered the agenda sequence of the weekly meetings.  The logic behind the new sequence stems from industrial engineering, statistics, and (strangely) portfolio management.

Every process has a certain amount of variance associated with it.  Because variances are additive, the more processes you have in series without buffers, the larger the variance of the overall system.

We attack system variance in two ways.  First, we try to keep each segment of the meeting within the allotted time.  Second, we utilize buffers after our high variance segments.

The invocation and pledge take about the same amount of time each week.  On the other hand, the time it takes to introduce the visiting Rotarians and guests depends on how many there are!  We moved this high variance item to a time slot before the fellowship break.  This way, regardless of the number of introductions, we would not jeopardize our ability to introduce the speaker at 12:34 p.m.

There is a natural variance in times for the featured speaker, sergeant-at-arms, and students of the month.  We absorb this variance with the club announcement segment, which is done at the end of the meeting.  If we are running tight on time, I can use more concise language or even omit certain announcements.

If you are seeking a consistent result, eliminate variance!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

Four Bottles

This Week's Meeting

Name:  Timothy Barone and John Furrie
Topic:  The Art of Wine Blending
  • Isn't it hard enough to know something of the different grapes used to make a wine like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot or Pinot Noir?  Just knowing that there are different grapes can be a great start but sometimes those grapes are mixed together to makes something even better! The presentation will consist of an introduction to wine blending and why the whole is often far greater than the sum of the parts.

Meetings

  • Please plan to meet in the Mangrove Room on the golf course side this week.
New Member
Tim Wynn
  • At our club meeting on October 5th, Tim Wynn was inducted into The Rotary Club of Naples as an honorary member and presented with a Paul Harris Fellow in appreciation for all he has done for our club. We welcome Tim and look forward to having him at our meetings whenever he wishes to attend.

District Conference Cruise

  • The 2012 District 6960 Conference will be a 4 night cruise on the Celebrity Millennium from April 12th to 16th.  The ship leaves Miami on Thursday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m., visits Key West and Cozumel, and then returns to Miami on Monday, April 16 at 7 a.m.  Rotarians will do a service project in Cozumel.  The Rotary Club of Naples has budgeted $1,800 toward the cruise, which will be divided equally among all members who make reservations for the cruise.  For example, if six members (and their spouses) make reservations for the cruise, each Rotarian would be reimbursed $300 by the club.  Prices start from as low as $549.51 per person (including all taxes, fees, prepaid gratuities, meals, entertainment, and special conference events).  To book reservations, call VIP World Travel at 941-377-0017.  Please let Sue Cobb know about your reservation as soon as it has been made (no later than November 30, 2011) so that we can plan for reimbursements.

Collier Harvest

  • Collier Harvest is a great way for you to be involved by helping us to help feed our community. It requires just an early Thursday morning of your time by going to the Publix Supermarket at the Vineyards on Pine Ridge Road to pick up excess food to deliver to one or two local charities which distribute to those in need. Please speak to Jason Shimko or Ron Gustason to lend a hand.

Dictionary Day

  • This week sign up sheets will be available again at our club meeting for our annual Dictionary Day on the morning of October 28. We we provide a free dictionary to every third grader at Lake Park Elementary, Pelican Marsh Elementary and Poinciana Elementary Schools. It only takes about an hour of your time and is a very rewarding experience. If you want to participate, please email Jacques Groenteman with your name and the school where you would like to serve.
