Featured Member, Stew Macfarlane
Stew was born in New Hampshire and grew up in Nutley NJ. In 1963 he and his wife, Mary, took over Mac's Esso service from Stew's dad. In 1971, they sold it when they moved to Naples.
After trying to work as a mechanic for Bob Taylor Chevy Stew decided it wasn't so bad owning his own business. So they opened Mac's Downtown Chevron in 1972 and later a second location Coastland Chevron. Knowing Chevron was closing its Naples locations the Macfarlanes purchased a building on Shirley St and opened Coastland Auto Center and Coastland Towing then later Coastland Auto Body. In 1995 they contracted with the state of FL for the Road Rangers motorist assistance program on Alligator Alley. In 2006 they sold the businesses and property in order to retire. Stew's hobbies are boating, fishing, scuba diving, r/v travel and raising koi in his fish pond. He and his wife, Mary, have 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren. Stew joined The Rotary Club Of Naples in 1975 and has been club president, Governor's rep for John Smarge, Club treasurer, Interact Club chair, Middle school student of the month chair, sergeant of arms chair and had perfect attendance for his first 32 years in Rotary.

Featured Member, Shane McIntosh
Shane was born in Warren, Ohio and grew up in West Farmington, Ohio, a rural community of only 940 people. He and his wife, Cyndi, have two boys, Shane (20) at Santa Fe College and Drew (19) at Florida Southern College.
Shane is self-employed and his company manages employee benefits and group health, long term care and Medicare supplement policies.
He is still trying to figure out how he likes to spend his spare time now that he has some for the first time in 20 years.
Shane loves to bring new people into Rotary and quietly watch them grow and develop into Service Above Self. If you look at our Rotary family tree, you might be surprised to see how many people can trace their membership through some branches back to Shane.

Sign Up For Vocational Day!
|
Greetings!
Just as September is named "New Generations Month" by Rotary International, October is dubbed "Vocational Month". In honor of Vocational Month, the Rotary Club of Naples has a tradition of selecting one day in October for "Vocational Day". This year, we will celebrate Vocational Day on Wednesday, October 12.
Vocational Day is a fun break from our normal routine! Instead of all of us meeting at the Naples Beach Hotel for our typical Wednesday luncheon, we split up and meet at several businesses around town. These local businesses have a full hour to showcase what they do in the community.
My brother, Steve Fontana, has worked diligently to set up three outstanding locations (thanks, Steve!):
- Philharmonic Center for the Arts
- Whole Foods
- John Collins Auto Parts
Scroll down to the Vocational Service section of this eBulletin to see the descriptions of each location. Note that the meeting time at each location will be 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
So that we may plan for the correct number of lunches to be served at each location, we ask that each member of our club sign up in advance for one of the three locations. On Wednesday, October 12, instead of going to the Naples Beach Hotel that day, you would go to the location you selected.
Sign-up sheets started making the rounds at our luncheon last week. Expect to see them passed around the room on September 21, September 28, and October 5, as well. Space at each location is limited; first come, first served.
Vocational Day is a blast! I hope that everyone in our club signs up!
Yours in Rotary Service,
Frank

This Week's Meeting Name: Marcus Zillman Topic: The Future of the Internet
- Learning about the future of the Internet will guide us on our ongoing cyber journey into tomorrow! Knowing what works now and what will work in the future will direct our decisions for eCommerce, Social Networking and the Web 3.0. Semantic search engines will give us artificial intelligence based results ... it is happening now in Healthcare!! Exciting times ahead in all areas!!
New Members
- The Rotary Club of Naples is honored to announce the induction of Adam Miller, Kimber Oberg Bosley, Bruce Mousa, and Larry Martin as our newest members on Wednesday September 14. Adam is a Rabbi, Kimber is a private mortgage banker, Bruce is in education and Larry is a CPA. Our club has a total of 104 members (80 Active, 21 Active Rule of 85, and 3 Honorary). Congratulations to our new members and welcome to The Rotary Club of Naples!
Board Meeting - The Board of Directors held its regular meeting on Monday, September 12.
- Programming: Jennifer Hoy and the Social Committee are going to investigate our options for a 60th Anniversary celebration on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. More details to come.
- Christmas Bell Ringing: Bell ringing will take place the week of December 4 through 10.
- The Rotary Foundation (TRF): So far, our 101 active members have donated $4,040 to TRF. This averages to $40/person. Our goal is to hit $200/person by the end of the 2011-2012 Rotary year (June 30, 2012). There were only 12 members who removed the optional donation from their July invoices who do not already contribute to TRF.
- Rotaract: The board approved a gift of $3,000 to the Rotaract Club of Naples so that they have seed capital to get started. Initial costs include incorporating, applying to the IRS for 501(c)(4) tax-exempt status, and opening a bank account.
- The next board meeting will be held on Monday, October 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Naples High School conference room.

Collier Harvest
- Collier Harvest is a terrific way for you to help our community. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Ron Gustason or Jason Shimko to find out where you can volunteer a little bit of your time (about an hour and a half in the morning before work). This is a great activity for all members and especially new members. To start, you would commit to a "ride-along" with one of the current committee members. Jason occasionally needs extra help and he can ask the Collier Harvest people for an extra route(s) if we have a lot of interest.

Jamaican Water Project
- In March 2010, Rich Ahrens took a trip to Jamaica with Rotary Club of Naples North and presented a check from our club for $1,000 to help the Rotary Club of Portland complete their water project high in the Blue Mountains. The villagers in and around Maidstone all walked considerable rugged distance to reach the single water source for all of their needs. We were just informed by our contact in Portland that the bureaucracy has finally been overcome and the new pump is connected to a new electrical source and new distribution pipes. While Naples North was the principal club in this project, we also played an important part in bringing clean water to about 400 people!

Dictionary Day
- This week sign up sheets will be available at our club meeting for our annual Dictionary Day on the morning of October 14. We provide a free dictionary to every third grader at Lake Park Elementary, Pelican Marsh Elementary and Poinciana Elementary Schools. It only takes about an hour of your time and is a very rewarding experience. If you want to participate, please email Jacques Groenteman with your name and the school where you would like to serve.

Vocational Day 2011 Locations
It's that time of year again! This year, Vocational Day will be held on Wednesday, October 12th. We will not have our regular Wednesday meeting at the Naples Beach Hotel. Instead, our members will have a choice of three different locations around Naples to see how various local businesses do what they do best. Sign up sheets will be available at this week's meeting.
Philharmonic Center for the Arts: At this location, we will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Phil. This will include a tour of the facility as well as a lunch and lecture by the some of the staff. We will learn about the history of the Phil and what ideas the new CEO and President, Kathleen van Bergen, is planning to implement. The program will begin at 12 p.m. and will end around 1 p.m.
Whole Foods: At this location, we will be touring the Whole Foods store, located at the Mercato in Naples. We will have a tour of the facility followed by a lunch and lecture by the Whole Foods staff. The program will begin at 12 p.m. and will end around 1 p.m.
John Collins Auto Parts: Our members will have an opportunity to see the business of our very own John Collins. We will tour his store and have a catered lunch while hearing a lecture. The store is located at 5598 Shirley Street, Naples, FL 34109, phone number (239) 597-1725. The program will begin at 12 p.m. and will end around 1 p.m.
On behalf of the Vocational Day committee (Frank Fontana and myself), we hope you enjoy the programs planned for Vocational Day this year.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Steven J. Fontana
