September is New Generations Month

Greetings!

You may recall that in the past, there were four Avenues of Service:  Club, Community, International, and Vocational.  In April 2010, the Rotary International Council on Legislation approved New Generations as the fifth Avenue of Service.  New Generations Service targets programs designed to benefit youth and young adults.

Rotary International designates each month for a particular focus (except for July and May, which are not designated).  September is "New Generations Month".

As the new school year kicks into gear, this is a wonderful time to thank everyone who has a positive influence on young people, especially teachers, school leaders, and mentors.  We are proud of our very own Nancy Graham, the principal of Naples High School, and appreciate her leadership in the community!

The Rotary Club of Naples feels a strong connection with the education and well-being of our youth and young adults, and we therefore have several New Generations Service projects.  I would like to thank the following project leaders for having such a favorable impact on our youth and young adults:

  • Dictionary Day:  Nancy Graham and Jacques Groenteman
  • Interact Club:  Nancy Graham and Stew Macfarlane
  • Rotaract Club:  Mia Delk and Susan Suarez
  • Scholarships:  Nancy GrahamRich Kirschner, and Shane McIntosh
  • Seminar For Tomorrow's Leaders (S4TL):  Nancy Graham

In addition, there are many more who quietly volunteer in the background to help carry out these projects.  Whether you are distributing dictionaries to third graders on October 14, spreading the word about the Rotaract Club of Naples to help them find members, or evaluating how we should allocate scholarship money to the most deserving students, thank you for your commitment to New Generations Service!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

Interact Club Rush

 Interact

  • Last week an event called Club Rush took place at Naples High School on Thursday and Friday during lunch. It is an opportunity for all clubs to make students aware of their existence and to sign up members for the school year. Rotaract Club of Naples Secretary, Samantha Atzingen, attended both days to tell students about Interact and used our club exhibit to attract attention. Over the two days over 100 students signed up to learn more about Interact!

Vocational Day 2011 Locations

It's that time of year again!  This year, Vocational Day will be held on Wednesday, October 12th.  We will not have our regular Wednesday meeting at the Naples Beach Hotel.  Instead, our members will have a choice of three different locations around Naples to see how various local businesses do what they do best.  Sign up sheets will be available at this week's meeting.

Philharmonic Center for the Arts:  At this location, we will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Phil.  This will include a tour of the facility as well as a lunch and lecture by the some of the staff.  We will learn about the history of the Phil and what ideas the new CEO and President, Kathleen van Bergen, is planning to implement.  The program will begin at 12 p.m. and will end around 1 p.m.

Whole Foods:  At this location, we will be touring the Whole Foods store, located at the Mercato in Naples.  We will have a tour of the facility followed by a lunch and lecture by the Whole Foods staff.  The program will begin at 12 p.m. and will end around 1 p.m.

John Collins Auto Parts:  Our members will have an opportunity to see the business of our very own John Collins.  We will tour his store and have a catered lunch while hearing a lecture.  The store is located at 5598 Shirley Street, Naples, FL 34109, phone number (239) 597-1725.  The program will begin at 12 p.m. and will end around 1 p.m.

On behalf of the Vocational Day committee (Frank Fontana and myself), we hope you enjoy the programs planned for Vocational Day this year.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Steven J. Fontana
