New Generations Service:
Investing in the Future

Greetings!

New Generations Service targets programs designed to benefit youth and young adults.  This Rotary year, we are focusing on five projects ("thank you" to the following leaders!):

  • Dictionary Day:  On October 14, 2011, volunteers from the Rotary Club of Naples will distribute dictionaries to third graders at Lake Park, Pelican Marsh, and Poinciana elementary schools.  Please contact project chair Jacques Groenteman or director Nancy Graham if you would like to help hand out dictionaries that day.
  • Interact Club:  The Naples High School Interact Club is an active service organization comprised of teenage students eager to give back to the community.  You may reach project chair Stew Macfarlane or director Nancy Graham for more details.
  • Scholarships:  Each spring, our Rotary club awards approximately $20,000 in scholarships to seniors graduating from Naples High.  Please contact project chair Shane McIntosh, director Nancy Graham, or president-nominee Rich Kirschner if you would like to join the committee and help pick which rising stars receive scholarships.
  • Seminar For Tomorrow's Leaders (S4TL):  The Rotary Club of Naples will sponsor two students to attend S4TL for one week in June 2012 on the campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland.  If you are interested in becoming involved, please see project chair and director Nancy Graham.

Helping our young leaders is a fun way to invest in the future!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

Sculptor

This Week's Meeting

Topic:           Honoring The Troops - A Sculptor's                                          Perspective

Speaker:       Michael Jernigan

  • As a portrait sculptor and veteran, Michael Jernigan, went to Iraq and Afghanistan in 2010 and was embedded as a Media Artist with the troops.  He photographed and measured members of all branches of the military, and is now in the process of creating 21 bronze portrait sculptures which will be exhibited around the U.S. in 2013 and 2014.  The exhibit will be shown at the von Liebig Art Center in Naples in October 2013.  It will include a life-size German Shepherd Specialized Search Dog Mike met in the Baghdad Airport and will be sculpted by his wife, Linda.

Meetings

  • Due to ongoing construction around the Sunset Terrace, please note that we will be meeting on the other side of the street in the hotel's conference center in the Mangrove Room again this week.

Roster

  • The club roster was just updated!

  • This Friday starts Naples High School football season! Come and join the Golden Eagle fans in our club at Mulligan's in Naples Plaza (US 41 and Golden Gate Pkwy) at 6 PM for drinks and a good time. Even if you aren't going to the game, you're sure to have a great time.

EndPolioNow

The Rotary Foundation

  • Rotary International Director John Smarge passed along some fantastic news regarding the lack of new polio cases in India.  In 2009, there were 236 new cases of polio in 35 districts in India.  In 2010, there were 30 new cases in 15 districts.  In 2011 year-to-date, there is only 1 new case of polio in 1 district, which was encountered at the beginning of the year.  Since that one incident, no new cases have been reported!  Rotary International is taking things one week at a time, and proves that we are "this close" to eradicating polio in India.

Rotaract Club

  • We are excited to announce that the Rotary Club of Naples will be sponsoring the Rotaract Club of Naples.  Rotaract is  a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they're sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary. As one of Rotary's most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 8,400 clubs in about 170 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.

If you know anyone who may be interested in learning about or  joining this newly formed club, there will be a Development Meeting at 6:30 pm on August 24, 2011 at Andalucia Club House (on Whipperwill Lane)  for prospective members.   Please contact Stephanie Smarge for more information and directions.
