Greetings!
When it comes to common sense, I usually tend to agree with Warren Buffett. He likes to call the lottery a "tax on the ignorant" and that is accurate if you look at the odds. But emotionally I have to be a contrarian even to my trusted Uncle Warren.
You see when I lived in New Jersey, my friends Mike and Kathy were down on their luck. He was a mason and construction was lousy. They were ready to hock her diamond but one morning he ran in the bedroom unable to speak. When he managed to get out the words, he was able to tell his bride they had won the NJ Lottery and a handsome $18 million at that.
Lucky? Absolutely, but my wife who is known to buy an occasional ticket is right when she says the only way to guarantee not winning is to never buy a ticket.
Today I went to Sports Authority to purchase canopies on sale for Grapes & Apes. Jay suggested I ask the manager if there was a chance for an additional discount. I complied not expecting anything but was rewarded with an additional 20% off! Between the sale, our tax exempt status and the manager's discount, we saved about $1,200! More than a 50% discount from the regular prices! All I had to do was ask and I got lucky but if I didn't ask, I would have guaranteed paying a much higher price.
So I encourage you to keep this story in mind as you work on Grapes & Apes in the coming months. Take a moment and tell our story, be prepared to mention the causes we have helped and you, too, might get lucky which adds directly to our bottom line.
Back to my buddy, Lucky Mike. Shortly after we moved to Naples, he and Kathy came to visit us and I made him pay for dinner. I would not have been so bold except he had just won another million bucks playing a scratch-off lottery card. No kidding. You gotta play to win.
Sincerely,
Rich Ahrens
