Club Service:  At the Heart of the Action

Greetings!

For this week and the next four weeks, my weekly message will focus on the five Avenues of Service, one avenue at a time.  This week we are starting with Club Service.

Club Service helps the club to function successfully and covers several areas.  Please see the Club Service section of today's eBulletin for a list of areas and the corresponding chair(s).

So...how can you volunteer to help with Club Service?  Some ways include:

  • Work at the registration desk for a month (contact Rich Kirschner).
  • Lead us in our invocation and pledge, introduce visiting Rotarians and guests, or introduce our speaker (contact Rich Kirschner).
  • Email your club announcement request to Rich Ahrens, our eBulletin editor, no later than Sunday evening for the eBulletin blast on Tuesday.
  • Share information about a difficult or favorable situation faced by our members with our Sunshine committee (contact Ron Gustason).
  • Help plan one of our quarterly social events (contact Jennifer Hoy).
  • Promptly submit your makeups to Mia Delk, our Secretary.

All of us can help Club Service by paying our invoices promptly each quarter.  It saves our club so much time and money to avoid the struggles associated with collecting payments.  Thank you for paying your invoices as soon as you receive them.

Club Service is critical to our overall success.  If our meetings are fun, attendance will be strong.  If our operations are smooth, we will have more resources for service projects.  This sets the stage for each of us to have "a Rotary moment."  And that is what makes it all worthwhile!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

This Week's Meeting

Topic:           "55...How A Moderately Fifty Guy

Is Surviving the Great Recession"

Speaker:       William Kyle Kitchens

  • The topic of conversation is a series of short stories and images from a self-described "mid-fifty under-employed architect so financially underwater that he would need to reach UP to touch the Titanic". Please enjoy his humorous transformation from "He who dies with the most debt wins" to the joys of financial de-escalation, luck, and dancing your troubles away.

The Rotary Foundation
  • At a training session for The Rotary Foundation on Saturday, July 16 in Port Charlotte, it was revealed that Rotarians have donated $187 million of the $200 million goal needed for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to match with an additional $355 million.  Polio remains in four countries:  Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.  At the 2011 RI Convention in New Orleans, Bill Gates said "ending polio is our top priority" (for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation).

S4TL2011

S4TL

  • Our two S4TL students, Courtney Kramer (of football coach Bill Kramer's clan) and Sarah DeShields, were extremely thrilled by their experience last month! Take a look at excerpts from letters they sent to Nancy Graham and learn more about this excellent Rotary program. S4TL alumni, Drew McIntosh, was a leader this year. You can see in the photo how much fun these students had and we can be proud as a club that we are truly an important part of providing a forum for training the leaders of the future!
