Geography of Rotary Revealed
|
Greetings!
Rotary International divides the world into zones, districts, and areas. The system is logical.
- Zone: The world is divided into 34 zones, each of which has approximately the same number of Rotarians. The Rotary Club of Naples is located in Zone 34, which includes the states of Georgia and Florida, as well as 25 countries in the Caribbean! Rotarians in Zone 34 speak English, French, Dutch, and Spanish as primary languages. Rotary International's Board of Directors is composed of 19 members: the president (Kalyan Banerjee this year), the president-elect, and 17 directors. Putting it in this perspective, consider how amazing it is that our own John Smarge is currently the Director of RI representing Zones 33 and 34!
- District: Each zone is divided into districts. Zone 34 has 14 districts, one of which is District 6960, home of The Rotary Club of Naples. Each district is led by a governor, a position which rotates each year. The governor of District 6960 this year is Denise Hearn. (Denise is also our guest speaker this week; see below for details.) Past District Governors in our club include John Smarge, Hal Atzingen, and Hank Dawson.
- Area: Each district is divided into areas. District 6960 has 11 areas, each of which is led by an assistant governor. The Rotary Club of Naples is in Area 2, led by assistant governor Marcus Zillman this year. There are five clubs in Area 2.
In the world of Rotary, the club is at the heart of the action (and the fun)! Still, it is important to step back and realize that we are part of something even bigger.
Yours in Rotary Service, Frank

This Week's Meeting
Topic: District Governor Official Club Visit
Speaker: Denise Hearn, District Governor
Organization: Rotary District 6960
- District 6960 includes 51 Rotary clubs in Southwest Florida, spanning Collier, Lee, Hendry, Glades, Charlotte, DeSoto, Sarasota, and Manatee counties. In the 2011-2012 Rotary year, our District Governor is Denise Hearn from the Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch in Manatee County. Governor Denise will share with us her vision for the Rotary year ahead.
Meetings
- Due to ongoing construction around the Sunset Terrace, please note that we will be meeting on the other side of the street in the hotel's conference center in the Mangrove Room this week and next week. No need to be puzzled about where we meet! Just look for the Rotary sign by the road each week. The side the sign is on is the side where we meet.
Board Meeting
- The Board of Directors held its first meeting of the new Rotary year on Monday, July 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Naples High School conference room.
- The board approved budgets for the club and foundation, including an allocation of $45,000 toward various service projects and charities.
- The most exciting news from the board meeting was the creation of an endowment fund within our club's foundation, Rotary Club of Naples Charitable Foundation, Inc. The seed has been planted! In the coming years, we plan to grow our endowment fund via contributions and investment returns. In the long run, investment returns greater than inflation would fund service projects and charities each year.
- Our club has a total of 108 members (84 Active, 22 Active Rule of 85, and 2 Honorary). Memberships have recently been terminated for Curtis Cassner and Travis Hayes.
- Each committee in the club and foundation has a Director responsible for overseeing it. Please refer to each avenue of service in the next eBulletin for more details.
- The next board meeting will be held on Monday, August 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Naples High School conference room. Future board meetings through June 2012 will be held on the second Monday of every month.
Club Calendar
- Our dynamic club calendar can be found on our website under Club Service or by clicking the link for Club Calendar in the bulletin. If you have any club dates or events to include, please email Jason Shimko, our calendar manager.
Socials
- The Heart of Rock 'n Roll is Still Beating! Join us for an evening of Music at The Naples Philharmonic on Wednesday, November 2 at 8:00 PM for a concert starring 80's music legend Huey Lewis & The News. Tickets are $99.00 per person and a limited number remain available. For more information, please contact Hal Atzingen to assure your seats! We will have our usual orchestra pit seats which are the first two rows directly in front of the stage, the best in the house!

Grapes & Apes
- The sponsorship committee has created a list of sponsorship opportunities for Grapes & Apes 2012. Sponsorship chair Randy Kurtz has sponsor materials with the various levels of support that are available as well as specific sponsoring opportunities inside the event itself. Some of the opportunities are limited in number so they will be offered first to our members for the next two weeks before printing the final copies for solicitation of other businesses. Please see Randy or Michael Orden to learn about the levels of support that are available.

Gift of Life
- Our Hearts Are in Jamaica! The Rotary Club of Naples made a $5,000 contribution to Gift of Life again this year and again the Rotary Club of Tampa has spearheaded a grant initiative. Last year the grant reached $60,000 and saved move than 12 children. This year it is going to top $80,000 and will save at least 20 children! That is the power of multiplying our money through district matching grants and the Rotary Foundation.

Vocational Day
- Each October our club takes a day to meet at various sites around the Naples community to learn more about area businesses. Past venues have included the YMCA, Naples Community Hospital, MedScribe, Kurtz Homes, Bentley Village and the Ritz-Carlton. President Frank is seeking ideas for this year. If you have a recommendation, please email Frank.
