Reach Within To Embrace Humanity
Greetings!

Each President of Rotary International brings their unique twist to the year with their theme.  The 2011-2012 President of Rotary International, Kalyan Banerjee, whose hometown is Vapi, India, has selected the theme "Reach Within to Embrace Humanity".

As President Kalyan says, "all of humanity has the same dreams, the same hopes, the same aspirations, and similar dilemmas.  We need to first start with ourselves and then work outward.  First, we find our own peace, and then work to establish peace in our homes, our families, and our communities."

Just as last year we strove to be "bigger, better, bolder", there are three emphases this year:

  • Family:  The family and the home are at the core.  Our service begins here.  We approach our community and humanity as an extended family.
  •  Continuity:  We need a degree of consistency from year-to-year.  We must build on our successes and expand on them.  Our greatest obligation is to PolioPlus, where we are "so close" to eradicating polio.
  •  Change:  At first, it might seem counterintuitive to emphasize both continuity and change.  Aren't these polar opposites?  The truth is that continuity and change are at the heart of being process-focused.  Our activities must be clearly defined to be repeatable, but we must also recognize where improvement is needed and continuously strive to make things better.

This year, let's have fun as we reach within to embrace humanity!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Frank

This Week's Meeting

Topic:           Designing Sustainability into Rotary's

Future Vision Water Projects

Speaker:       John Capece, Water Projects Committee Member,

D6960 & Rotary Club of LaBelle

Zuzana Kelprlikova, Projects Intern, Intelligentsia                                   International, Inc.

Organization: Rotary District 6960 Water Projects Committee

  • The new Rotary Future Vision grants program seeks to enhance the "sustainability" of all humanitarian projects, including Rotary water & sanitation international projects. The training of young professionals in the ideals of Rotary as well as in the technical and managerial aspects of water projects is a key element in "capacity building" - the central tenet of sustainability. Previous D6960 water projects that have included such elements and these programmatic components can be included in future water projects.

Meetings

  • The Naples Beach Hotel is in the midst of some construction but we will likely continue to meet in the Sunset Terrace. In the event our entrance is blocked, please use the side door by the grassy area.  At present, you must walk through the main lobby of the hotel in order to get to our room.  This may be the situation throughout the summer.  We will keep you posted in the e-bulletin as we learn more.

Membership

  • Interested in proposing a new member?  Complete the new member application and give it to Ryan Blauch, membership chair.

Billing

  • Due to the huge success of Grapes & Apes in March 2011, our club's foundation is now self-sustaining financially.  Therefore, we are no longer billing our members $50/quarter for an "unrestricted contribution" to Rotary Club of Naples Charitable Foundation, Inc., nor are we billing our members $25/quarter for a donation to Camp Florida (instead, our club's foundation will donate directly to Camp Florida from the money raised by Grapes and Apes).  On our quarterly invoices, in place of these donations, we are including a "suggested" $50/quarter donation to The Rotary Foundation, which will count toward the donor's Paul Harris Fellow status.
  • The Naples Beach Hotel has raised the price of our lunches from $18.50 to $19.00, effective July 1.  Our club's Board of Directors, in turn, voted on June 27 to raise the price we charge from $18.50 to $20.00, effective July 1.  The $20 price will be the same for all members, guests, and visiting Rotarians.  The extra $1 per meal will help the club cover weekly costs for AV equipment rental, the podium and microphone, meals for our students-of-the-month, meals for our guest speakers, and meals for distinguished guests.  Please keep in mind that we are not going to do a Pot of Gold this year, so the extra money we collect from meals will help balance our club's budget.
  • Invoices were emailed by our Executive Secretary, Sue Cobb, on July 8.  If you did not receive your invoice, please email or call her at 239-537-1133.  Thank you in advance for your prompt payment.

The Rotary Foundation
  • You'll notice some changes on your next quarterly bill regarding The Rotary Foundation. As you know, for the past few years, Hal Atzingen and Sam Hinkle have headed up our club's TRF program and have asked everyone to make a pledge and to contribute to OUR Rotary Foundation. This past year we unfortunately did not meet our club's goal. Numerous members have asked about having the TRF contribution put back on the quarterly billing statements. Thanks to the success of our Grapes & Apes event, we have subtracted a few items off of your bill and have added a contribution to The Rotary Foundation.
  • We are asking that everyone contribute $50.00 per quarter which would help us meet our club goal of $200.00 per capita. Other than your Rotary International dues and lunches, this is the only financial responsibility that will be placed on you. The Rotary Foundation is what allows us to do things like Gift of Life, Matching Grants, Ambassadorial Scholars, Group Study Exchange Teams and PolioPlus. It is what makes us the greatest charitable organization in the world today! Please include this payment on your quarterly invoices and help us ensure that we make a community, our country and our world a little bit better place for us all!
