Project Green
The
City of Rochester presented its Project Green
initiative to neighborhood leaders and friends of NeighborWorks® Rochester at our office
on March 30. Chuck Thomas, the City's Director of Planning, met
with 18 individuals to unfold a plan that will attempt to both balance Rochester's housing market
and green our neighborhoods at the same time.
Project
Green will remove 2,988 buildings over the next 20 years in order to bring Rochester's vacancy rate
to 5%-7%. Because of the loss of over 130,000 individuals over the past 60
years, Rochester
has an over supply of housing. By reducing the number of obsolete units in the
housing inventory, the overall level of vacancy will be reduced; strengthening
our housing market.
To ensure that the vacant lots left behind don't diminish
the quality of life in our neighborhoods, the City will be assembling lots to
create sites that can be used for future redevelopment, urban agriculture,
parks, gardens, etc. To learn more, check out the Project Green plan on the City's website.

New York
State Bill #S5711-A
New
Urbanism design principles are starting to make their way into legislation
coming out of Albany.
There is a bill that is now moving to the Senate that would amend State highway
law to provide for a more complete street design on future road projects.
Called the Complete Streets bill, this legislation, if passed, would require
bicycle and pedestrian accommodations to be included in the planning and
development of State, County and local transportation facilities, plans and
programs.
Not
only would this bill improve road safety for all users, it would provide for
alternative modes of transportation that are more friendly to our environment!
This bill is of the highest priority for Empire State Future (ESF). ESF's vision is a coming together of many civic improvement organizations,
planning groups, and individuals interested in advancing the principles
of "smart growth" and turning them into reality in cities, towns and
villages all across the Empire State. NeighborWorks® Rochester is currently an active member of ESF.
