Restore Hetch Hetchy board members have created a blog where you can keep abreast of our day-to-day success and provide us with your feedback.

Greetings!

Fall is upon us and San Francisco has already been doused by two large storms.  A welcome relief from seven months of summer fog and sunshine but a stark reminder of the fact that San Francisco does virtually nothing to capture and use its rainwater.  Given its high density of population, San Francisco is one of the most concrete-covered cities in the country.  Consequently, the vast majority of rainfall sf floodis directed into the sewer and out into the bay instead of into the local aquifer.  The photo at right that my friend Greg took downtown during the last storm really brings home that San Francisco, should it chose to use them, does have other sources of water besides the Tuolumne River.

It's our job to help the good people of San Francisco to understand how a few substantive changes in the City manages its water could create tremendous environmental benefits for the Tuolumne River as well as Yosemite National Park.

To that end we have recently made some additions to Restore Hetch Hetchy that will significantly strengthen our capacity to do so.  First,
Brent Blackwelder and Roger Williams have joined our board of directors.  Brent is the former President of Friends of the Earth and the founding Chairman of Friends of the River.  Roger is a Director at Yahoo, Inc and a trip leader for the Sierra Club.

Secondly, Catherine "Cat" McGuire has joined us in the HQ as our star Outreach Intern.  On any given day over the last 6 weeks Cat has lead a merry team of volunteers to various neighborhoods in San Francisco to talk to residents about the merits of restoring Hetch Hetchy Valley.  Cat starts classes as a freshman at UC Berkeley in January-please email her at
[email protected] and welcome her to our team!

We could not move this campaign forward without your continued support.  If you want to get jump on your end of year, tax-deductible donations

Former Yosemite Park Superintendents Join Forces
To Restore Hetch Hetchy Valley

We are pleased to announce that Ms. B. J. Griffin and Mr. Bob Binnewies have joined their former colleague, Mr. Dave Mihalic, on the National Advisory Board of Restore Hetch Hetchy.   Ms. Griffin served as Superintendent of Yosemite National Park from 1995 to 1997, Mr. Binnewies served as Superintendent from 1979 to 1986 and Mr. Mihalic served as Superintendent from 1999 to 2003.  Collectively they bring more than 80 years of experience working in our national parks to Restore Hetch Hetchy

As career conservationists and recreation enthusiasts they understand first hand the extraordinary impact the restoration of Hetch Hetchy Valley would have on our National Park System.  We are thrilled that they have joined this fight and very appreciative to have access to their counsel and expertise.

Other Restore Hetch Hetchy Advisory Board Members include former U.S. Secretary of the Interior Donald Hodel, Patagonia, Inc founder Yvon Chouinard, former Sierra Club Executive Director Mike McCloskey, and former Environmental Defense Fund Regional Director Tom Graff.

"I am delighted to join the effort to restore this unique ecosystem in Yosemite National Park.  As our nation responds to the challenges of climate change it is important to focus on environmental restoration as part of the solution.  Restoring Hetch Hetchy Valley is not about fixing the sins of the past-it's about recognizing and acting upon the opportunities of the future.  The restoration of Hetch Hetchy Valley-and the recreation of 8 miles of the wild and scenic Tuolumne River-will make Yosemite National Park whole again."

B. J. Griffin
Supperintendent of Yosemite National Park
1995 - 1997

Conversation with a Tramp:
An Evening with John Muir
This stirring production has been presented every summer in Yosemite National Park - and throughout the country and around the world as well - since 1983. It depicts Muir's last dramatic battle to preserve the beautiful Hetch Hetchy Valley, part of our National Park, but threatened by San Francisco's desire to construct a dam there, drowning it hundreds of feet deep. Audience members are his guests as they await final word of the Hetch Hetchy's fate from Washington decision makers. While waiting, Muir's righteous anger at the 'temple destroyers' is tempered by his hearty good humor, and his relating of a number of his most extraordinary wilderness adventures, including his remarkable 'tree ride' in a Sierra windstorm. A fine introduction to both Muir the man and his profound love of wildness.

Host a House Party!

Our outreach efforts are moving indoors and we're hoping to schedule 20 house parties before the end of the year.  A house party is a simple way for you to help build support for the restoration of Hetch Hetchy Valley and to help raise the funds we need to succeed.  It simply involves you playing host to 10-12 friends and neighbors, showing a brief video and talking with them briefly about why you support restoring Hetch Hetchy.   It's easy: you'll get a packet of information including brochures and talking points, and a sample email to send to your friends.  We can also provide a speaker if you would prefer someone else make "the pitch."

Acclaimed new narrative nonfiction story about indigenous survival strategies, drought-proofing and adapting to water scarcity.

In the 1990s local author James G. Workman, born and raised on Hetch Hetchy water, led Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt's dam removal campaign across the U.S.

For the next seven years in Africa he explored the causes and consequences of water scarcity, absorbing what Californians can learn and adopt -- from the oldest indigenous society besieged in the Kalahari Desert -- about using less water and coping with climate change.

Now his book - Heart of Dryness: How the Last Bushmen Can Help Us Endure the Coming Age of Permanent Drought - can empower us to do the same in California.
Because they want to support our work, the author and the legendary San Francisco bookstore, The Booksmith, offer advantages to you and us as part of Restore Hetch Hetchy.

When you order, be sure to mention us, and Booksmith will contribute 15% of each book sale to Restore Hetch Hetchy. As an extra bonus, the author will dedicate his royalties, a combined contribution of $5 per book.
