Exercise May  Prevent  Sudden Death

Everyone suffers from stress; however some are more susceptible than others.  A survey conducted at the University of Chicago claims that 92% of Americans are mildly to seriously stressed out, and that the primary cause of stress is work.  A new study conducted in France set out to determine the causes of sudden cardiac death, and found that stress was the number one cause.

Researchers collected data from nearly 8,000 people over a total of 23 years. They found that the people with the highest risk of sudden death via heart attack were those who had the greatest increases in heart rate in response to even minor stress.  The greater risk of heart attack can be attributed to the greater strain on the heart in response to stress.  Exercise is a direct and known way to reduce this stress and the resulting fast fluctuations in heart rate.

Weekly Motivational Tips

  • Challenge yourself!  Set a goal and work towards achieving it.  Try training for a 5K race or other local charitable activity/event.  You'll be rewarding yourself by completing it and you'll feel even better knowing that you helped support a cause you care about.
  • Spend quality time together!  You can increase physical activity by involving your whole family!   A walk outside with your spouse and children is a nice way to add a little activity to your day.
  • Comfort is key!  When you are exercising, be sure to dress comfortably!  Wearing the right shoes and clothes for your activities can make a big difference.
