Back to School: Teachers on the Land Teaching from the Land workshop aims to get kids on the land | |
QHS Teacher Megan Smith takes field notes at FRLT's Teaching from the Land workshop
|
"7th-12th grade kids are capable of taking great action to take care of what they care about. Knowledge plus action equals power."
With these words, Learning Landscapes Coordinator Rob Wade kicked off a three day workshop for teachers on FRLT's recently conserved Heart K Ranch in Genesee Valley.
The Teaching from the Land workshop builds on teachers' own expertise and supports them with hands-on training to plan and implement service-learning and restoration projects with their students on lands adjacent to their schools.
In early August, middle and high school teachers from Westwood, Chester, Greenville, Quincy, and Portola participated in the 3-day workshop.
Maidu community member Trina Cunningham welcomed the teachers to the Heart K, her cultural and personal homeland. Teachers planted native plants in the riparian area with Feather River Resource Conservation District's Terri Rust. David Arsenault of Plumas Audubon and the Sierra Valley RCD led a bird monitoring training. Gia Martynn and Jim Wilcox of Feather River Coordinated Resource Management (CRM) got the teachers out in the creek (some all the way in!) to monitor stream flows. And that was just the first day!
Other activities included touring Feather River CRM's "pond and plug" riparian restoration, exploring diverse methods of controlling invasive weeds with FRLT's Gabe Miller, and building bird nesting boxes and platforms with Plumas Audubon's Jerry and Terry Williams. Canoeing from the Heart K down to Robert Meacher's Genesee Store for dinner offered a nice cool down, especially for the teachers that capsized!
On the final day, the teachers took all they had learned and planned restoration projects that they and their students will implement on their own schools' Learning Landscape. And to help them get the job done, each school team got to order $1,500 worth of tools and supplies, thanks to a matching RAC grant from the Feather River CRM.
Check out the photos here.Gratitude to the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation & PG&E's 5 Star Restoration Program, Plumas County RAC and Feather River CRM, Feather River College's SB70 grant, and our generous donors. In the coming months, watch for more updates on the teachers' work to Teach from the Land and lead students in caring for and restoring their own Learning Landscapes. |
