April 2012- Vol 5, Issue 4
|
Greetings!
| |
Wow! In pulling together the newsletter for this month, I am astonished at how much we've got going on. April and May are shaping up to be action-packed with workshops and learning opportunities, on top of our premier-event of the year, the 2012 Governor's Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service Breakfast on May 8th. We're very excited about the breakfast this year, as we will be welcoming Linda Carlyle, the Secretary of Cultural Resources for Governor Bev Perdue to the event as our keynote speaker. Registrations are already filling up, and our e-mail invitations will be going out within the next week. This event usually sees a sell-out crowd, so plan to register sooner rather than later. We hope that we'll see many of our partners and supporters at this event, as we celebrate all of the great work accomplished each and every day by volunteers in our community!
Also this month, we'll be welcoming a site visit from our national network to review our Neighboring Collaborative. We've been getting a lot of recognition and kudos from within the network, both from program staff and the HandsOn Corps staff (who support our VISTA member,) and we're excited by the work that the students, neighbors and volunteer leaders have accomplished as we approach the end of the school year. This includes the operation of a mobile soup kitchen, a collaborative effort with Exodus United Baptist Church and the Manna Meals team at Pine Grove United Methodist Church. Also in the works is a new lending library to serve Forest Park Elementary students and the wider Waughtown neighborhood. The collaborative is working with the Maya Angelou Institute at Winston Salem State University and the Forsyth County Public Library to establish this resource for the neighborhood. Donations of books, for both children and adults, have already begun to be collected, and we would gratefully accept other contributions, particularly Spanish language books, towards this effort.
We're also working on a Spring Fling that will celebrate the End-of-Grade testing at Forest Park Elementary. Working in conjunction with Calvary Baptist Church Southside, Southside Christian Church, and Cuervito Morada Hispanic Food Distributors, the event will feature games and activities that foster literacy for the school's children. (We're looking for 40+ volunteers to help us host this event; you can register through HandsOn Connect!) Finally, all of the neighbors will come together for a community clean up on April 21st. We look forward to partnering with the Waughtown Neighborhood Association and Forest Park Youth Leadership Council to spearhead the clean-up, and hope that it might lead to the establishment of a community garden. If you're interested in helping out with any of the Neighboring Collaborative activities, don't hesitate to reach out to Morgan Owen at 724-2866. She'd love to hear from you!
Whew! You'll find lots of other great goings-on in this newsletter. It's amazing what a small group of people can accomplish when we partner and collaborate with others. The work of HandsOn NWNC is greater than the sum of our small number of parts; our impact is directly tied to the support we receive from our board, our hundreds of nonprofit and business partners, and our funders. Without you, none of this important work would be possible. Thank you!
May we all enjoy the cool breezes and sunny days to come!

Nonprofit Essentials 2011-2012:
Evaluation
|
Tuesday, April 26th, Noon to 4:30 pm
Location: WFU campus, Reynolda Hall, Room 301. Parking is available on Davis Field. For directions to the Reynolda Hall and to Davis Field, see map.
The nonprofit sector is increasingly under pressure to show meaningful results. This class will examine different evaluation models and lead you through the process of designing an approach to measure programs, creating meaningful measures,
collecting and analyzing data, generating a report and communicating results to document impact, improve services, and support fundraising efforts.
The class will be taught by Doug Easterling, Ph.D., currently Associate Professor with the Department of Social Sciences & Health Policy Division of Public Health Sciences, Wake Forest University Health Sciences. Dr. Easterling previously served as the Director of Research and Evaluation at The Colorado Trust (1992-1999), where he managed the process through which the foundation's community-based initiatives were evaluated. The outcomes and lessons from those initiatives are described in Promoting Health at the Community Level (Sage Publications, 2003), which he co-edited. Since returning to academia in 1999, he has evaluated foundation-sponsored initiatives designed to promote community-based problem solving, social capital, and improved race relations. Through workshops, presentations, papers and consultation, he has helped a number of foundations develop their strategies for evaluation, environmental scanning, and organizational learning. Along with Ross Conner, he co-teaches the evaluation module for the Health Forum's Fellowship programs.
Cost: $35 per person for Supporting Partners/ $45 all others. $300 for all nine classes! (This is the seventh class of the series; you may begin at any point. Signing up for the full series is a great option for organizations that have several employees who could benefit from taking different courses. Learn more about our Nonprofit Essentials series here.) The cost includes take-home materials and a networking lunch with your peers.

Enjoy one of our most popular classes at a time perfect for folks who can't take time away from work! To help nonprofits increase the effectiveness and leadership capacity of their boards, we developed this workshop specifically geared for board members who are in leadership positions or who are moving towards leadership roles on nonprofit boards as officers or committee chairs. Topics covered in the class include a review of board officer roles and responsibilities, committee chair accountabilities, attributes of effective board and committee leaders, a self-assessment leadership instrument, advanced Roberts Rules of Order training, planning processes and tools, leading and conducting effective meetings, group communications, appraising board and committee effectiveness, and other topics of interest as identified by workshop participants.

He served over 20 years as a senior level manager providing consulting services to RJR corporate and operating company management of Del Monte, Nabisco, Sea Land Shipping , Kentucky Fried Chicken, etc. on a national and international (over 30 countries) basis in the areas of strategic and operational planning, organizational analysis, staffing structure, training and leadership development. Value of Volunteer Time Increases in 2011!
|
Independent Sector has released the newest 2011 rate per volunteer service hour completed: $21.79, a 43-cent increase over 2010. This value of volunteer time is based on the average hourly earnings of all production and nonsupervisory workers on private nonfarm payrolls (as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics). Independent Sector takes this figure and increases it by 12 percent to estimate for fringe benefits. This figure is considered to be the industry standard in calculating the economic benefits that volunteers provide to organizations and communities each year. And that figure can add up: for The Points of Light Institute (which houses our national network,) this meant an economic impact of more than $700 million!
You can also use the state-by-state rate to calculate the value of your volunteers, but as this information lags the national rate by a full year, most organizations use the national rate.

Founder of DC Central Kitchen Creates PAC to Represent Interests of Nonprofits!
|
This interesting story in The Huffington Post caught our attention last month. Robert Egger, the founder of DC Central Kitchen, has created CForward, a political action committee (PAC) specifically to endorse and support candidates that agree to work with and advance the cause of nonprofits. Part of the job of the PAC will be to educate public officials about the huge economic impact nonprofits have in communities, and how seemingly minor changes in public policy or funding can have a major impact on their fate. Take a few moments and read the article; we'd love to discuss this with those of you planning to attend the Forsyth County District Day!

Nonprofit Finance Fund Releases Their 2012 State of the Nonprofit Sector Survey Results!
|
The Nonprofit Finance Fund, who presented at one of our Best Practice Breakfasts a few years ago, released the results of its 2012 State of the Nonprofit Sector Survey in early April. More than 4,500 respondents at nonprofits across the country shared the details of how their organizations and finances are changing under current economic conditions. The survey results reflect what we've been witnessing locally: while many nonprofits weathered 2011 through adaptation and creative use of resources, most are still facing significant financial and organizational hurdles. Specifically:
- 85% of nonprofits experienced an increased demand for services in 2011, on top of three years of 70%+ increases each year since 2008. Nearly all of the nonprofits expected demand to continue to increase in 2012.
- 57% have 3 months or less cash-on-hand
- 87% don't expect their financial outlook to improve much in 2012.
Some good news was that more than half had hired additional staff in 2011, and only 10% expected to cut staff positions in 2012. You can read the full report here.

Nonprofit Social Networking Benchmark Study Released!
|
The 2012 Nonprofit Social Network Benchmark Report, conducted by NTEN, Common Knowledge and Blackbaud, surveyed nonprofits on their use of external sites like Facebook and Twitter, as well as any internal networking sites the organizations might use. The growth in nonprofits' social communities may surprise you: the average organization's Twitter community grew by 81% while their Facebook community grew by 30%. Another unique aspect of this study was that they were able to calculate the cost of adding a new person to each network: on average, a Facebook connection cost a nonprofit $3.50, while a Twitter follower was cheaper at $2.05 per person.
If you're interested to see how your nonprofit compares, check out The Huffington Post article or download the PDF of the report.
