February 2012- Vol 5, Issue 2
Greetings!

It is February, and it hasn't snowed yet, and my daughter is very disappointed. However, it has decided to get cold, and according to one prognosticator, winter could still share its unique delights with us at some point over the next six weeks.

From now through May, you'll have lots of chances to gain new skills and insights, connect with your peers, advocate for your cause and celebrate your volunteers. We definitely hope you'll keep an eye on our programming calendar and plan to attend one of our upcoming events.

Also this month, I want to share an exciting opportunity with you. ABC is launching a new daily talk show, The Revolution, and is partnering with Points of Light Institute (which houses our national network,) to mobilize viewers to create a community of change on The Revolution Wall on FacebookThe Revolution helps people create personal change from the inside out; finding their passion and discovering how they can engage with their own community. Winter 2012 Best Practice Breakfast:

Succession Planning for a Sustainable Future

Wednesday, March 28th, 8:00 am to 9:30 am
Location: Winston-Salem First, (formerly First Assembly,) 3730 University Parkway (see map)

Change - sometimes surprisingly fast change - remains the one constant we can count on. Despite this, many organizations fail to prepare for the most predictable change of all - the departure of their executive or other key leaders. While succession planning may sound like a daunting task, there's good news: you can complete the basics - an emergency backup plan and a board-adopted succession policy - in one to three months.

This workshop, delivered in partnership with TransitionGuides, will help provide participants with a blueprint to get started and give an overview of systems and strategy to create a more "leaderful" culture in your organization - one focused on developing and maximizing your most valuable asset, your human capital.

Raven Consulting Group President, Jeanie Duncan, will be the presenter for the breakfast. Jeanie is recognized as a guiding presence in transforming the way organizations think and operate to improve performance

and achieve goals. Through a seasoned blend of strategic consultation, assessment, facilitation, and professional coaching, Jeanie guides organizational transformation and increases people's capacity to lead it. Before launching Raven Consulting Group in 2011, she served the nonprofit sector for 20 years in various executive leadership roles - most recently as President and CEO of the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro. Jeanie holds her BA in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the CFRE designation from CFRE International, and a Certificate in Non-Profit Management from Duke University. Her board service includes the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Arts North Carolina, and Americans for the Arts.

Cost: FREE! to Supporting Partners/ $5 all others. Cost includes a light breakfast and take home materials.

HANDSON NWNC IN THE NEWS
Neighboring Collaborative Highlighted By The Winston-Salem Chronicle!

We were very excited that our Neighboring Collaborative in the Waughtown neighborhood was featured in a front-page cover story in the Winston-Salem Chronicle last week. The story covered the Collaborative's first Community Meal, which we held on January 30th.  Hosted by Exodus Baptist Church, the event drew nearly 40 neighbors from the Forest Park areaNeighboring Community Meal, Jan. 2012 of Waughtown together for a free meal and conversation about the future of the neighborhood. Our Neighboring VISTA member, Morgan Owen, facilitated a discussion about the needs of the community, and also debriefed them on a survey neighbors had completed earlier about volunteer-driven projects that they are interested in starting. The survey also assessed which residents have the skills already to help make the projects work. We look forward to having similar meetings the last Monday of every month to help forward this work. If you're interested in getting involved, don't hesitate to contact Morgan Owen or call her at 336-724-2866.

Another Study Shows that Volunteering is Good for Your Mental and Physical Health!

While we all know that volunteering can "make you feel good," a recent report published in the December 2011 issue of The International Journal of Person Centered Medicine, demonstrated that people who give back to others do actually lead happier and healthier lives than those who do not volunteer. At a time when Americans are under stress like never before, the study discusses the need for primary care physicians to share the physical and mental health benefits of volunteering with their patients. The study indicated that volunteering is particularly beneficial for patients with mild to moderate depression, the elderly, and for those with chronic diseases and substance abuse problems.

The report is the fifth annual article to examine the most recent research on the health impact of altruism. The report reviewed more than 50 studies published during the past 40 years on the connection between altruism and physical and mental well-being. To read a full article on the study and its results, click here.

Refresh Your Annual Report for Maximum Impact!

Many of us are in the process of creating our annual reports for the year, or even debating if it is worth doing one. Annual reports can be a valuable tool for highlighting your organization's impact to current and potential supporters. However, for some, the annual report has become bland and boring. Your donors may even be able to predict what you will send out - same design, typography, and images you have been using for years.

Recently, Achieve CEO, Derrick Feldmann shared ideas to reinvent your annual report. Whether your goals are to appeal to a new audience or to infuse new energy into your support base, rethinking your annual report is a great way to convey how important donor and volunteer support was to your organization last year. It can also help to pave the way to ask for additional support for 2012 and beyond.  Visit Achieve to learn more.  Many thanks to the HandsOn Network for the head's up!
