January 2011- Vol 4, Issue 1
|
| Greetings! |
The beginning of new year brings with it the promise of things yet to come, challenges yet to face, and clients yet to be served. Here at HandsOn NWNC, we're looking forward to further developing our programming, building our network, and creating new partnerships that will enable us to continue to provide valuable services you to all of your in our network. We're currently finalizing the details of our second-annual MLK Day of Service event (you can find out more below) and our spring programming calendar is filling up--another busy year is already underway! How will be able to help you in the new year? Shoot us an e-mail or pick up the phone and let us know! We're excited to announce that we're currently accepting nominations for the 2011 Forsyth County Governor's Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service! For the past four years, we have been honored to work with the United Way of Forsyth County to present these awards and honor our local recipients at a breakfast ceremony. These awards honor the best and brightest of Forsyth County's volunteers, those that go above and beyond to serve our local neighbors. We encourage you to nominate one of your own volunteers, and please share this opportunity with your colleagues and friends! Due to changes in the program at the state level, we've been forced to move up our timeline for the nominations significantly. Since this is the first year of these changes, and they were announced late, we have a very tight turnaround window for the nomination process. All nomination forms are due via e-mail by 5 pm on Monday, January 31st! For more details, see the explanatory cover letter and the nomination form. Because of the short time we have for our volunteer committee to select the winners, we will not be able to accept hard copies. (However, you should be prepared to provide one with original signatures if requested by us after the selection date.) Not in Forsyth County? Each county should have their own contact for the awards. You can find out more on the Governor's Office's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service. We are actively planning for the breakfast to happen in the mid-April to mid-May timeframe. Due to the reduced time for nomination submission, we are unsure how many nominees we'll have this year. Thus, we are waiting to confirm a location until after the 31st. Be on the lookout for more details about the breakfast in our February newsletter!
In addition to working on the Governor's Awards, we're also looking forward to a bunch of exciting offerings coming up in February: the next semester of our Nonprofit Essentials series; new information sessions; and the return of our very popular class for new board leaders. Hope to see you at one of our events soon!
Happy New Year! Executive Director |

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service 2011:
Follow the Leader. Become a Leader! | |
Monday, January 17th and preceding weekend
Read-In Location on Saturday, Jan. 15th: Wake Forest University, Benson University Center
HandsOn NWNC is partnering this year with Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, Salem College, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, My Sistas Keeper, Inc., Communities in Schools, Forest Park Elementary School, Wiley Middle School, OneEconomy AmeriCorps VISTA Program and GIFTS to plan the second-annual 2011 MLK Day Read-In. This service event promotes Dr. King's messages of service and literacy and will be held on the campus of Wake Forest University on the Saturday before the King holiday.
During the Read-In, children ages 4-10 will be matched with volunteers and will read together. The children will then receive two age-appropriate books to take home, one being civil-rights themed (books are being collected through a book-drive organized by our partners.) The event will also feature a variety of service stations where the children and their volunteers will learn about Dr. King and perform various acts of service to benefit community members. We're planning for 200 volunteers and 200 students to take part, and that nearly 400 books will be donated. Ms. Mutter Evans, founder of the Noon Hour Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, will emcee the event and speak about Dr. King and the civil rights movement. We are excited to build on our success from last year to create an event that is meaningful for both the children who are participating and for the volunteers who participate. All children and volunteers will be pre-registered prior to the event.
Through the efforts of our partners, we believe that most of our participant and volunteer slots for this event will be filled quickly. However, if you'd like to discuss ways that your organization can get involved in other MLK Day service efforts, please don't hesitate to give Michelle Bennett, our VISTA member, a call at 336-724-2866. We'd love to see service events happen all over our six-county area!

WFU's Institute for Public Engagement's Summer Immersion Program Releases New Guidelines |
Over the past four summers, many of you have benefitted from the engagement of Wake Forest students interested in learning more about the nonprofit sector. The Institute for Public Engagement's Summer Nonprofit Immersion program provides Wake Forest University undergraduate students with an integrated program that combines a high quality educational experience with a structured internship placement and reflection practice.
This 8 week program begins with a three-day Nonprofit Organizations immersion class, providing 15 hours of course instruction and case study review. Following the first week class and orientation, students will begin their internship placements. Placements will be arranged with partnering nonprofit agencies working in a range of service areas. These internships are full-time, requiring students to work in the partner's office Monday through Friday during regular business hours, with the exception of a Friday morning reflection seminar, which will be led by Institute.
Internships must serve at least two purposes. First, the student gains a deeper understanding of the nonprofit sector through working with leaders as they manage and run nonprofit organizations. This allows for a better understanding of the students' academic preparation. Second, the internships bring important resources to nonprofit organizations, particularly in staff time and energy, allowing our community partners to better serve their missions.
If you are interested in learning more about this program please contact Velvet Bryant at 758-3310. We will be hosting an information session with Velvet in February; more details will be in the next issue of The Nonprofit Connection!

Help Celebrate National Mentoring Month in January! |
National Mentoring Month is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month by continuing to raise awareness about the important role mentoring can play in academic engagement. NMM is a partnership between the Harvard School of Public Health, MENTOR, and the Corporation for National and Community Service, working together to focus national attention on the need for mentors.
Here are just a few things you can do to help celebrate: become a mentor in your community, partner with a mentoring organization, think about the mentors in your life and post a tribute to them online, make a donation to a mentoring organization, and work to explore ways to help children succeed academically through mentoring. You can see more ideas at their website. Additional information, including PSAs, is available here. |

Federal Mileage Business Rate Increases for 2011 |
The IRS has announced that the standard mileage reimbursement rate has increased to 51 cents per mile for this year. Unfortunately, the volunteer mileage rate remains at 14 cents per mile--it would take an independent act of Congress to change that rate. Thanks to the NC Center for Nonprofits for the head's up! |
