Women-Owned Small Businesses
| | New Rules for Women-Owned Small Businesses Require Registration to Bid on Federal Contracts
By Ed Kinberg, Board Certified, Construction Law Fellow, National Contract Management Association Kinberg & Associates, LLC
On February 4, 2011, new
rules will go into effect for women-owned small businesses
contracting with the Federal Government.
This rule establishes two
categories of women-owned businesses: Economically Disadvantaged
Women-Owned Small Business (EDWOSB) and Women-Owned Small
Business (WOSB) and authorizes set-asides for each category. In order
to submit bids or proposals for either type of set-aside, the
regulations state the business:
... must be duly certified by
a Federal agency, a State government, or a national certifying entity approved
by the Small Business Administration (SBA) as an EDWOSB or WOSB or must certify
to the contracting officer and provide adequate documentation that it is an
EDWOSB or WOSB.
In order to reduce the burden
of having to submit supporting documentation with each bid or proposal, the
SBA is in the process of establishing a WOSB Program repository
that will include documents showing the business has received a third party
verification of its status.

Don't Experience Business Failures Due to Lack of Planning
As a Floridian, you are ready for a disastrous weather event
at any given moment. You have flashlights, food reserves, house shutter
procedures, stores of clean water, and maybe even a generator to comfortably
defeat a storm. You are even prepared to jump in a car and spend hours driving a
few miles across the state if the situation calls for it. As a business
leader, you have even greater responsibility to not only ensure your
personal survival, but also the survival of your organization. A small but
significant part of continuity and disaster planning for your business involves
protecting your data. Many businesses fail after a catastrophic data
loss, so it's a topic not to be taken lightly.
The key to recovering from a loss of data is considering all
of the possible risks and designing a system that not only fits your budget, but
adequately makes you whole after an unexpected event. Since not all data threats
come in the form of a named storm, it is important to consider theft, vandalism,
fire, flood, lightning surge, or the most likely event: hardware failure for a
variety of reasons.
