Iggy News April 2010
Its that time of year again!  Time to register for the 2nd annual Creative Writing/Character Development and Illustration Camp hosted by Children's Author, Melissa M. Williams, with guest Illustrator Ryan Shaw!

5 Day Creative Writing and Illustration Summer Workshop

The Iggy the Iguana Character Development Workshop is designed to teach students how to think outside the box and create unique characters with interesting stories.  The author, Melissa Williams, will discuss the way she used her own experiences with her pets to create the fictional characters in Iggy the Iguana while teaching the use of archetypes, conflict resolution, and original storyline development tactics.  Students will learn how to bring their own ideas to life through words and illustrations as professional illustrator, Ryan Shaw, explains the process of connecting to the author's characters with art.  During the week, the students will have the opportunity to use their newly learned skills to come up with their own character and develop a unique short story that will be eligible for publication in the "I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids" Contest.

CHILDRENS COLUMN
FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS
IGGY AND WESTSIDE

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

The lessons in the Iggy the Iguana Series have been recognized as useful tools for children and adults to use in efforts to bring forth realists topics of discussion.  These topics have  been written specifically with elementary school students in mind, thereby opening up a channel for communication and questions for parent and child or student and teacher. The foundation of the character interaction in Iggy the Iguana was carefully crafted with an intentional background of psychology. Awareness of diversity and acceptance in regards to family structure, outward appearance, culture, gender, personality style, and emotional well-being have been used realistically while using fun-loving animal characters to lighten the read.  My work in the counseling system and in the classroom has given me a wide variety of situations that either relate very well to children or create empathetic understanding for others who experience life differently. Some of these situations, I believe only a teacher on the outside looking into the classroom environment will have the opportunity to witness. Read my children's column Kids Korner at the Westside Story for specific breakdowns of the talking points and lessons presented in the Iggy the Iguana Chapter Books. I wrote these books for children but also for adults to read with their kids at home or at school too!

Thank you for being a part of positive reading for children. Please feel free to share your thoughts with me at the Westside Story News.

Thank you!
Melissa
