Dear HOPE friends and supporters,

Welcome to our Summer newsletter! It's that time of year again where we bring a little Cambodian news to your electronic worlds. Firstly we want to bring to your attention some current news topics hitting the headlines.

Whilst the BBC reported last week on a new virus found in Cambodia it was highlighted that 50 children die everyday in Cambodia, that's one in 20 who will not live to see their fifth birthdays.

This is still a staggering amount to comprehend and although H.O.P.E's charitable goals do not target health directly we strongly feel that education is key to counteracting some of the basic health issues in the country.

The young adult curriculum that H.O.P.E support cover  basic hygiene, sex education and food and nutrition. All vital topics for all young men and women to know about. For young adults growing up in a developing country these lessons are essential when access to basic health care is limited and where simple actions, if known, could save lives.

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever is a mosquito spread disease and Angkor Hospital for Children have seen a significant rise in children suffering from Dengue Fever.

In the last 6 months 73,267 children have been treated and 375 children were admitted to Hospital due to Dengue Fever.

Simple actions can reduce these statistics by advising people to cover exposed water, whether outside jars, discarded tyres or coconut shells where mosquitoes love to breed. It is also important to encourage people to cover up and use treated mosquito nets.

Our friends working at the
Angkor Hospital for Children are short of blood supplies and have put an urgent plea out to get them replenished. Please encourage anyone in Siem Reap to give - not just ex-pats, but tourists and the locals.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require any further information and we hope you enjoy this news edition.
Cambodian Circus in London

H.O.P.E Trustees and many of you who have visited Cambodia may have had the opportunity to see the wonderful Phare Ponleu Selpak Circus in Battambang. This July they are travelling to Europe and performing alongside French dance company Compagnie UB.

Set up in 1994 by eight young Cambodians, Phare Ponleu Selpak continues to grow, teaching streets kids, trafficked children and orphans amazing acrobatic moves, music and arts, all the while using these skills to reintegrate them into society.

Phare Ponleu Selpak offers training in circus arts and now 20 of those kids are young adults who have become outstanding professional artists performing in Cambodia and around the world.

Between the 25-27th of July Londoners will get the opportunity to see them perform and for more ticket information visit the South Bank Centre website

Life Skills Graduation

Ravy from Salariin Kampuchea was delighted to share their news that
"...our first Life Skills class at Salariin Kampuchea has graduated! All 20 students passed, gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience on the course. A great achievement for the students and the school..."

Naro continued by saying "...we are going to arrange the new Life Skills. Our old Life Skills students give the presentations to all our English students to clarify the specify knowledge and the benefits while they were attending with Life Skills. Especially, the priority of Social Education and Career Training..."

This is at the heart of H.O.P.E's aims and objectives. By selecting committed and sustainable projects successful graduates become advocates of the programmes and encourage the next generation to sign up. By producing good role models the cycle of development continues and is undeniably one of H.O.P.E's biggest success stories.

Directly targeted at H.O.P.E supporters Naro says "Finally, I would like to say thank you very much for your help and support. It is very important to develop the country through education."

Anjali Young Adults give something back in their spare time!

Keeping with the health theme for this update, some young adults supported by H.O.P.E from Anjali House have been putting their limited spare time to great use - helping to redecorate a rural maternity hospital. The young guys gave up two weekends to clean, strip and paint the rooms - they are pictured enjoying the finished result - very impressive work and something our programmes are trying to encourage - Cambodians volunteering to help other Cambodians.  We remain very proud of them all.

Special Thanks

In our last newsletter you may remember how one generous H.O.P.E supporter was encouraging birthday party guests to donate to his Just Giving Page

Leon raised over £2,200.00 a staggering amount especially when converting this into $s and evaluating how many people this will potentially impact. Thank you, and your friends, very much for your kindness and generosity.

We are never to shy too hear your ideas and would love you to get in touch should you wish to do something fun and raise some money for the young adults we are supporting.

We're also looking for ideas on the cheapest way to get bulk donations to Cambodia. Potentially we could be sending used football boots, sport equipment and old books to Cambodia and looking for links with airlines or shipping companies to see if we can get these items over cheaply, safely and efficiently.
