Dear HOPE friends and supporters,

Welcome to HOPE's 6th newsletter and our three year anniversary. Back in 2008 when we first set up HOPE we never envisaged such huge support and we really are very grateful for every penny received, every km cycled and every individual effort made.

With your help and generosity we have had the chance to support hundreds of kids and young adults in Cambodia in harnessing opportunities through play and education. Given the recent events in London and across England we are convinced more than ever that children need to have a childhood, network and support to turn into responsible adults in their community. It is these values that motivated us to volunteer five years ago, start up the charity three years ago and drive us every day to make a difference in these kids' lives.

This summer we were extremely lucky that two HOPE supporters, on separate occasions, were game enough to brave the murky Thames waters to raise funds for HOPE. We would like to say a special thanks to Jo Beddington and Bart Thomas for their amazing courage and spirit. Read Bart's story below about his sterling efforts and what motivated him.

Next weekend more enthusiastic HOPE supporters in Norway will be doing their bit by taking part in a good humoured Nordic Challenge!

The Nordic Challenge will not only be fundraising for HOPE's young adult programmes, but as a special circumstance we are fundraising for an individual who has always shown great enthusiasm, motivation and most importantly always with a huge smile. Having being treated two years ago for Tuberculosis of the spine Khim had shown great progress in his rehabilitation to date, however his pain and numbness in his legs had returned. X-rays revealed that his spine was severely damaged and deteriorating. Khim is in urgent need of surgery and HOPE are helping Sangkheum Center for children raise money for his treatment.

The cost of the surgery is extremely high and Sangkheum are looking at various charities and organisations that specifically fund surgeries for children living in countries without adequate medical care. Please contact us if you have any advice or leads on charities that may fit the bill.

Congratulations to all those year twelve students who passed their exams. The young adults have spent the last couple of months studying hard and were very nervous during the whole process. We look forward to hearing their choice of activity now they've received their results. Whether two will be off to nursing college in Battambang or taking university scholarships in Phnom Penh or simply taking advantage of job opportunities in Siem Reap and keeping their education options open.

This November the HOPE trustees will both be together on the ground again in Siem Reap and will spend at least six weeks monitoring and evaluating the projects HOPE support with the help of your donations. As Trustees we feel very responsible in ensuring your money is used in the most sustainable way and optimising the number of people that benefit from the fund.

For the third year running in December HOPE will be entering its young adults in the Angkor Wat bike ride and seeking to raise more funds for these individuals. We always love your support on the day, so if anyone is in Siem Reap on Saturday 3rd December we would love you to join us. Or if you are planning a trip to Cambodia why not plan it around this weekend and get involved! More Info!

Enjoy the newsletter and if there is anything you would like to see added or deleted please let us know. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information.
This Life Cambodia Internship Programme

Working alongside Billy Gorter and his strong team at This Life Cambodia (TLC) over the years we have become huge fans of his work. Amazed by his energy, motivation and commitment to developing education and human rights we have long wanted to get behind him and show our support.

This year we are very pleased to be providing 50% of the funding for their first Internship programme whereby two female young adults from the rural countryside have been selected to work with the TLC team for two years. Gaining invaluable work experience in the office they are also attending university and being provided a salary to sustain their living costs whilst in Siem Reap.

Not only have these young adults had an exciting opportunity to further their education, they visit their home villages every week and offer advice and support to youngsters in all areas of life, liaise with teachers to monitor the kid's progress and identify any problems within the community that TLC can assist with.

TLC's strategy is to improve the quality of life for undeserved and vulnerable groups in Cambodia and focuses on developing educational and skill development programmes.

In the meantime TLC would like to thank HOPE sponsors for supporting one of their interns, saying that HOPE's support is making a positive change in their life through university education. By providing the opportunity for further learning, through university and on the job training our interns will have a bright future.

HOPE funds recently contributed towards the delivery of a succesful workshop in Siem Reap helping young adults understand more about life and sexuality

There are many universal problems, obstacles and challenges young adults face all over the world whether it is passing their exams, deciding to go to university or the complexities of whether to go on a date with someone.  Often without parents or siblings, there is no one to turn to for adult advice.

HOPE specifically fund Young Adult Programmes which concentrate on giving young adults strong support to transition into independent life.  Recently we used donations to grant funds towards the costs of providing a Sex Education Workshop in partnership with a number of other local organisations in Siem Reap.

A number of young adults from Sangkheum Centre, Anjali House and many more attended the workshop entitled: Knowledge And Reflection On Life & Sexuality Through a Holistic Approach.

Bart Thomas runs in support for HOPE

A few months back we got a pleasant surprise from Just Giving to say someone had set up a page to raise money for HOPE, delighted we investigated to see who it was. It was Bart Thomas, a name neither of us were familiar with. On further inquiry we were very pleased to hear that Bart had Googled charities in Siem Reap and we popped up...

He went onto say he and his wife had been to Cambodia as part of their honeymoon in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, and had noticed the number of children on the streets begging.  Not wanting to give them money directly, which may not actually benefit them, they vowed to donate/raise some money for a Cambodian children's charity on their return and this is where HOPE came in.

These feelings are very similar to HOPE Trustees' observations on their first visit to Siem Reap and both his fundraising and physical efforts are very much appreciated...

"I found it very disorientating and scrappy. The water wasn't the cleanest either. After the swim I got out of the water and felt quite dizzy as I tried to rush to take off my wetsuit, but once I got on my bike I felt ok and actually quite enjoyed the cycle. The run was very hot. I noticed my time on the penultimate lap and decided to try and finish in under 3 hours. My official time was 2 hours and 56 mins. I was glad it was over."

Bart's fundraising page is still open if you would like to show your support.

Another keen supporter from the start Jo Beddigton braved the murky

waters of the River Thames for a one mile swim in June. Tanya cheered her on all the way reporting on the low visibility and debris in the water including logs and even a chair!

Aiming to raise £250 she smashed her target by 608%!

Thank you both so much for undertaking such enormous challenges and for helping so many young adults.
