Spring Newsletter

Dear HOPE friends and supporters,

Here's a quick update from the HOPE team, letting you know what we've been supporting in Cambodia over the last few months.

THANK YOU for all your help and generosity - we really cannot support the projects and young adults we do without you.

Extra special thanks go to all those who participated in the Angkor Wat bike ride home and away! We will be doing it all over again in December 2011 and we hope to see you there!

Every month HOPE receive various donations from friends and family around the globe whether a company matching scheme, or direct donations and we would like to thank each and everyone of you - you know who you are!

You can set up a monthly donation easily through Just Giving (visit Just Giving - HOPE) Just £10 a month for one year together with any tax Just Giving can reclaim on our behalf would enable HOPE to:-

- buy 5 bicycles or

- support two teachers on valuable teacher training or

- fund one year computer tuition for one young adult or

- buy 4 sets of goal posts (made locally) or

- pay the monthly salaries for two local teachers

Big thanks to Steve Longley for his time and efforts during a recent teacher training session - which you will hear all about later in this newsletter.

This year so far we have supported:
over 500 kids in supplementary education
over 105 young adults in dedicated young adult programmes
over 100 young footballers in local tournaments
    4 teachers in teacher training

HARNESSING OPPORTUNITIES

In March this year we harnessed an opportunity for four teachers from Sangkheum Center for Children and Salariian Kampuchea to attend a teacher training course. This specialist two week training course was designed specifically for these organisations and was conducted by a trained and experienced professional. Within 8 workshops it covered teaching practice, classroom observation and a written assignment.

Now supporting three seperate programmes HOPE Young Adults continue to develop day by day studying hard for their semester exams whilst juggling work experience and English language classes. Sangkheum Young Adults have even found time to have additional cooking lessons. Anjali continue their programme with the addition of a new satelite house and Salariian kick start their Life Skills programme employing long term staff member Ravy as their Life Skills trainer.

Two young adults have been placed on a dual work placement at Angkor Hospital for Children including Pok who we have both taught from a young age at Sangkheum Center for children. This compliments Samnang's position as Healthcare Advisor. Two of Sangkheum's young adults carry on their studies outside of Siem Reap. Tola has succesfully completed his studies in Phnom Penh and is now in Battambang working whilst finishing his vocational training. Sambath continues his study in the big city.

One of Anjali's young adults is playing in an international football tournament representing Cambodia.

PLAY

In January HOPE were very happy to fund some sporty projects supporting the 'Play' element in our name. Firstly, by purchasing four sets of goal posts for the Siem Reap Junior Football tournament and by donating dozens of pairs of football socks which were kindly given to us by the Adias shop in Siem Reap.

We also are very pleased to annouce our recent sponsorship of the Angkor Empire Football Club having pledged $500 to cover ad hoc items like first aid kits, registrations fees, footballs, bibs, cones and very importantly drinking water during matches and training.

Angkor Empire FC are playing in Cambodia's 1st division (not Cambodia's main league). Their main criteria for the players are that they play good football, they are keen to train and they want to play. The team is a whole mix of backgrounds some from other projects we support, some from impoverished backgrounds, playing alongside others working in hotels, sellers or still at school. There is no conflict, just one goal to play football.

EDUCATION

HOPE have also had the opportunity to support a small school in Siem Reap who provides additional language classes in Korean, Japanese, English and Art. Jay's School located in the heart of Siem Reap is answering the continual need of varying linguistic skills to cater for the growth of tourists in the area. Two HOPE supporters walked the Inca Trail contributed to this donation.  Thanks Charlotte and Isobel for your hardwork in getting sponsors and completing the walk.

Building work has been carried out at My Grandfather's House (MGH) in Kralanh with two new classrooms to accommodate the growing need for supplementary school in the area. Two new teachers have been recruited to fill the classrooms and HOPE continues to pay staff wages to help with running costs.
