Autumn Newsletter |
Dear HOPE friends and supporters,
Here's a quick update from the HOPE team, letting you know what we've been up to over the past few months both in Cambodia and London!
We also have some exciting events coming up which we hope you can get involved with home and away.
Before we start we would just like to say a great big THANK YOU once again for your help and support - we really couldn't do it without you and the kids wouldn't be where they are today either.
Special mentions and thanks go to two amazing friends who have individually raised funds for HOPE, firstly Tanya's long term friend Pippa Lacey climbed the Great Wall of China and secondly long term supporter of HOPE Fi Reeves (together with baby bump) ran Sydney's City to Surf. Big thank yous for both your efforts and to your fundraisers who continue to make a difference to the young adults in Cambodia.
Congratulations to Miyako and Matt who tied the knot on the 26th June 2010. Thank you for choosing HOPE for wedding guests to donate to in exchange for wedding gifts. We look forward to welcoming you both to Cambodia next year and showing you the projects first hand. |

Cambodia News
During the summer, Cambodia-based trustee Jo has continued to work hard putting the right people together to generate progress on a number of projects. Further great leaps have been made at My Grandfather's House where Jo has been instrumental in turning a local Cambodian man's dream into reality. Today this supplementary school employs 4 teachers, funded by HOPE and best of all, has over 250 children registered for extra lessons. Click here to view the story so far...

Jo has also been the lynchpin to help two existing organisations address the dilemma of how to help the increasing number of teenagers in their programmes. She has introduced them to the ideas and experiences of the Sangkheum Young Adult programme, focussed on preparing the young adults when they are reaching the age when they need to move on. Site visits and meetings with staff were arranged providing first hand knowledge and insight from this existing programme, including their mistakes and lessons learnt so far.
Facilitating, sharing successes and avoiding reinventing "the wheel" were some of the key goals the Trustees set when HOPE was established in 2008 and so we are delighted this is actually being achieved.
And the results are immense - HOPE has now agreed to support the funding cost of employing the two Youth Leaders who will run the programmes at each of Salariin Kampuchea and Anjali House. This will result in a further 40 young people benefiting from a tried and tested programme and when added to the 16 young adults already in the Sangkheum programme there will be over 50 HOPE supported individuals enrolled in highly focussed programs giving them enhanced employment opportunities and the ability to sustain a healthy, happy future.

London News
Back in London Tanya braved the English summer and hosted a stall at the local Chiswick Fete - rain stayed away and she had a successful day selling beautiful and colourful Cambodian silk products (purses, bags and photo frames) made by the young women employed at the poverty reduction programme, The Silk Lab. Thanks to all those who came by that day.
We hold a reasonable amount of stock so if anyone fancies hosting a similar stall at a forthcoming Christmas fete that would be very welcomed. We think they all make great unique gifts (priced reasonably at £5 - £30).

Tanya has also been liaising with the London School of Economics as they prepare to hold a 6 week exhibition Cambodia: Reflections of the Khmer Rouge. The exhibition opens on the 1st of November between 10am - 8pm (Monday - Friday). This is going to be a fascinating and unique exhibition featuring material never seen outside of Cambodia and we highly recommend a visit. HOPE has been invited to provide material for a small display unit alongside the exhibition. We are extremely grateful to the Centre for the Study of Human Rights at LSE for giving us this opportunity. For more information about the exihibtion contact Tanya on tanya@hopeforcambodia.org.uk or click here to see more details. |

Events News
Tanya is getting very excited about her pending trip to Cambodia in December, when she will be visiting all the projects. Before then she needs to get some cycling practice in as she will also be joining Jo and some of the Young Adults in the annual Angkor Bike Ride. HOPE entered the Young Adults into the ride last year and they all got so much out of it we have agreed to do it again - and this time we might have a few more recruits too.
This is their way of trying to help themselves and if you would like to encourage them further please visit the Just giving page - Harnessing Oddlesofdosh through Pedaling and Exhaustion. If you are unable to visit Cambodia in December why not challenge yourself to 30km in your home town, even if you dont fancy bracing the cold in Europe why not set the challenge in your local gym? Whilst obviously missing out on the great atmosphere and beautiful backdrop of the Angkor temples, some keen supporters have committed to do 30kms on exercise bikes on the day of the event. One of them will be offshore just outside of Australia and the other will be pedaling in the training room of his company in Sandefjord, Norway.
