2009 - Activities, Action and Achievement
April's activities included Tanya's visit to Siem Reap and competing in the Global Giving Challenge to secure 50 unique donors. The response was incredible and by the middle of the month (coincidently Tanya's birthday) we had already met the challenge and achieved a valuable permanent spot on the Global Giving website. 'It was better than any birthday presents to see we had reached the goal!' Tanya said.  Be the 68th donor on the Global Giving page and continue to contribute to the Sangkheum's young adult programme.

Read more in Tanya's blog about how we visited projects supported by HOPE, looked for new ones and most importantly said hello to the kids and old friends!

In May one of HOPE's early supporters accomplished the challenge of cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats, with his family in tow. This raised both awareness and lots of money for HOPE and Oxfam. Thank you to Stu and your family for such superb effort and achievement.

In July, despite cancelling HOPE's London to Brighton cycle ride, two determined cyclists took on the challenge and Harnessed Oodles of dosh through Pedaling and Exhaustion (HOPE)! Raising a total over £1,500 the fearsome twosome cycled their way through the streets of Streatham to Pease Pottage, stopping for a quick rub down, refreshments and snacks, on their way to Brighton Pier.  Have a look at the day's event here and thank you Thomas, Heidi and Katy for your continuous positive attitude and support!

Back home in England Jo, family and friends rallied around collecting small gifts and presents to put up for prizes at the local fete with proceeds going back to HOPE. To complete the
activities a pub quiz and raffle was held on September 9th at The George in Trosley! Raising a a fantastic £300.00. This goes a long way in Cambodia and can support one young adult in university education for one year.

In October Amy Burdis will run a marathon in Leicester supporting HOPE and we wish her luck with her training. Thanks Amy for your support. If you would like to sponsor Amy then please visit her justgiving page.

Meet one of the young adults

Meet Bota! Bota, is one of the young adults residing at Sangkheum Center for children. He has one older brother (See Lita's story) and three younger brothers also at Sangkheum Center. After spending 8 years at the center, this September sees him taking the second stage of the Young Adult programme, a step to independence.

Moving to Siem Reap town centre, Bota with other young adults in the programme will be moving into a house partly funded by HOPE donations, to embark on his next step in life. Bota will start part-time work at www.angkorhotels.org whilst still attending school to finish exams and improve his English. His work will involve making hotel reservations and corresponding with guests. During his time away from the center he will be continuously monitored and cared for, as if a teenager was leaving home for the first time. His education, food, rent and bicycle to work is all taken care of by the funds raised by the young adult programme.

So far HOPE has contributed £5,000 this year to YAP and will continue to do so for the next two years.

Bota is also a keen footballer and has recently completed a football coaching course, whereby he is now fully qualified to train the young kids at the center! In addition he is the designer of our smiley and lively HOPE logo which he and his team mates designed during their art classes at summer school last year.

We shall keep you updated on Bota's progress and will introduce you to another young adult next time.

Angkor Bike Ride

In December whilst Europeans will be facing the thought of a few shopping Saturdays left for Xmas, those of us in Cambodia will be contemplating another cycle challenge! The Angkor Bike Ride will be held on Saturday 5th of December. This is a spectacular back drop for an awesome cycle ride.

During Tanya's Cambodian visit both Trustee's presented to the young adults explaining HOPE's goals and achievements. Enthused by Tanya's cycling efforts to Paris last year the young adults wanted to do something not only to take on a challenge, but to help raise funds for themselves and the next generation of young adults. This has now become an exciting challenge for a team of young adults to train over the next couple of months to cycle 30 KM around their national symbol Angkor Wat and the further ruins in the Angkor archeological site.

If you would like to support the young adults then please do so by visiting their team just giving page or if you are up for the challenge yourself or ready to set up a personal challenge why not set up your own Just Giving page - it's really easy.
