Welcome to HOPE's first newsletter,

First off we would like to thank you for all your support and encouragement!

Every couple of months we aim to bring you news of  what we've been up to, what we're going to do and share some ideas on how you can get involved.

Each newsletter will cover a project or young adult we have chosen to assist so you get an idea of how far your support goes.

If there is anything more you would like to see from our regular updates please let us know. Happy reading...

HOPE's 2008 Achievements

Harnessing Opportunities through Play and Education, launched in September 2008, with Trustee Tanya Seeley cycling from London to Paris and in turn raising not only the profile of HOPE, but a substantial amount of money to kick start HOPE into action.

The next four months saw a progression of achievements following on from the cycle challenge including...
  • Signing a three year Memorandum of Understanding to support Sangkheum's Center for Children's Young Adult Program.
  • Sponsoring two employees at the Self Help Community Center to attend a Permaculture course, organised by our friends at the Singing Tree Café
  • Enrolling Ton Pin for his second year at Build Bright University to study Tourism Management.

HOPE'S Project News

HOPE's trustees have a very personal goal to help the kids they initially taught at The Sangkheum Center for children. The center is home to over 50 kids and an educational and activities center for the local villages.

HOPE is aiming to provide support to the Sangkheum Program for Young Adults which is a two-stage project designed to benefit resident young adults. It has been initiated to help young adults integrate into the community when they end their stay at the center, by supporting further education or vocational training to prepare them for work outside and by providing them ongoing support when they move out.

We believe supporting this project will make a permanent difference to the life of young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds in Cambodia and so begin a cycle of improvement. Most of the children in the center have siblings that will be inspired and ultimately supported by the elder brothers and sisters.

'...Without the Sangkheum Program for Young Adults there may as well not be any orphanages if all it does is postpone the time until the children/young adults are back living off the streets in poverty...' Daniela - Project Manager, Sangkheum Center for Children

HOPE is a major donor, having committed to donate $10,000 a year to this project and pledging three years support to help these young adults in transition from childhood to adulthood, from life at the center to an independent and sustainable future.

Thanks to your support and generosity in 2008 HOPE donated its first contribution to reaching this target!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT

Face painting 2009 Outlook
This year it would be great to see a lot more of you and get you involved in our activities!

First off we are looking to incorporate an annual cycle challenge in our programme of events. This Summer will be a classic route from London to Brighton. In addition we are planning two pub quizzes, one in the Summer and one at Christmas. If you would like to organise one in your area we would be happy to help you organise it and supply the questions! Besides this, if you feel your local community, friends or family would like to get involved with organising a fundraiser we would love to hear from you. Be it...
  • Run a marathon
  • A non school uniform day
  • A dress down day at work
  • Organise a coffee morning
  • A car boot sale

Reading the daily news it is incredible to see how the financial crisis has snowballed and in view of this we have come up with a number of other ways you can show your support...

  • Improve our web rankings by linking our website to others
  • Log in every day to www.hopeforcambodia.org.uk and check for updates
  • Talk to people about HOPE and Cambodia
  • Blog about us
  • Join our Facebook group

Cambodia trades mostly in US$ therefore we have set up a US$ account for those wishing to donate in this currency thus avoiding transaction charges. Click here for more info.

In April Tanya will be joining Jo in Cambodia for a few weeks to catch up with all of her friends, including the pupils she used to teach at Sangkheum Center, see the progress of the Self Help Community Center and visit new projects in need of funding that we hope HOPE funds can support one day. Also, whilst Tanya is in Cambodia we aim to raise the profile of HOPE in Siem Reap. We are planning a treasure hunt and a celebration of HOPE's launch. Volunteers prior to event and helpers on the day will be very much appreciated, so if you would like to get involved please contact us.

Please log onto our website www.hopeforcambodia.org.uk regularly for activity updates and if you are on Facebook you can join our network group (Harnessing Opportunities through Play and Education - HOPE) and contribute news and feedback too!

Once again, thank you so much for your support thus far.

Best wishes for 2009,

Tanya and Jo
