Dear Student,
Happy Fall! It's hard to believe the semester is almost half over! I hope you have enjoyed the semester thus far. Much of the enjoyment you get from school is based upon the classes you are taking and the goals you have set for yourself. It is much easier to have a satisfying experience if you feel as though you have "found your niche" and are working toward a set goal.
Whether or not you have decided upon a career, the staff in the Career Services Center can assist you in setting and achieving these goals through career and life planning. We offer career counseling, career assessments, and an expansive career library. Practical experiences can also help you make the right career choices as well as lay a foundation for the future - there is no better way to network, try a career on for size, or gain confidence. Want to do some good while also gaining some valuable experience? If so, then volunteering may be just what you need!Volunteer activities can last for a couple of hours or be on-going. Many agencies greatly need volunteers. Come by Career Services if you are interested. Another way to gain practical experience is through Cooperative Education. Co-op allows you to earn college credit by working. We will be glad to help get you started!
Need help looking for a job? How about preparing for that interview or creating a resume? Yep, you can find that here too! Please come by and see us:
Career Services is part of, and located adjacent to, the Student Development Office. Our office hours are Monday-Thursday 7:30am-7:00 pm and Friday, 7:30am-3:00pm. Walk-ins are welcome. SCC Launches Mentoring Program
Need help? Confused about where to go when you have a question? Struggling to stay focused and be successful in your classes? Consider participating in SCC's new mentoring program. Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship in which a faculty or staff member provides guidance, support, and encouragement to a college student. If you decide to participate, an assigned faculty or staff member will help you answer academic and career questions and will connect you to college resources. We want you to be successful! We want you to work hard, learn a lot, and graduate, and we know that sometimes you need a little extra help to achieve your goals. Your mentor can be your go-to person for advice and help.
At the end of the semester, both student and mentor may decide to continue or end their mentoring relationship. Mentors will contact their mentees on a weekly basis in person or via email. Students interested in obtaining a mentor should complete an application. To get an application, call or email Kayla Collins at 386-3526 or collinsk@surry.edu

National Punctuation Day
In celebration of National Punctuation Day, September 24, the English Department at Surry Community College ran a contest open to students, faculty, and staff. Entrants were invited to submit a five-sentence paragraph containing all 13 punctuation marks. Sixty-six entries were received by the deadline. The winning paragraph was submitted by freshman Melissa Long of Hamptonville She was awarded a $25 gift certificate from Page's Bookstore in Mount Airy.
Her winning entry follows:
A passage from the Bible lends a good example of Christianity: "... For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me ... truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family [brethren], you did it to me" (Matthew 25:31-45). Is this how we're living from day to day? Do we follow God's direction for us - love one another? Some people say these acts are part of being a Christian; I say it's just being human! No matter the view, is it really a bad way to live one's life?
Sherry Youngquist and Gregg Heitschmidt were the coordinators for the contest. All members of the English Department assisted in providing the prize and reading the paragraphs to check that all punctuation marks were used -- and used correctly. |
