Dear Student;

Can you believe this school year is almost over? I hope this past year has been a successful one for you, full of good memories and learning experiences. Many of you will be crowning your achievements with a graduation ceremony or possibly transferring to a four-year school. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!

If you are returning to Surry Community College for summer or fall classes, you are to be commended also. Learning never stops! Many fall and summer classes are still open; check out the Important Dates section of this newsletter for enrollment information.

You may already know about our new online registration tool! All currently enrolled students can register for both summer and fall classes simply by logging in to their Knight Life account. Be sure to check out the additional online features within Knight Life such as transcript access, tuition payment, and program (graduation) evaluation.

Whatever your plans, feel free to contact the Office of Student Development with any questions you may have regarding your enrollment.

Have a wonderful summer!

Jamie Childress

gamblingHas Gambling Become More Than A Game?

Do you or someone you love have a gambling problem? When gambling is more than a game, no one wins.

Understanding Gambling.
Gambling is putting something at stake on the outcome of an event before it happens.  Gambling includes everything from buying a lottery or scratch ticket, playing bingo, to betting on a sports event.

What is problem gambling? Problem gambling is gambling to the extent that it causes emotional, family, legal, financial or other problems for the gambler and the people around the gambler.  Problem gambling can get worse over time and gambling problems can range from mild to severe.

What are some signs of problem gambling? When people have a problem with gambling, many times they feel like they need to bet more money more frequently.  They feel irritated when they try to stop and think that they can "chase" their losses to recover money.

If you or someone you love has a gambling problem call the North Carolina Gambling helpline at 1.877.718.5543. Services are free and confidential.  Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Experienced Master Level Clinicians available to take your call.
