The Diabetes Corner
|
|
When Barbara was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in the early spring of 2004 (with a blood glucose level of 357), her doctor was very sympathetic. He said that he personally would rather have cancer, because then he could simply have it cut out and get on with his life. He told her that she could expect the diabetes to require a total and very radical change in her entire life-style, and to grow progressively more severe over time.
He also told her that in our four local hospitals they perform an average of one leg amputation every day due to complications from diabetes, and that it was extremely important to learn and practice good foot care as well as blood glucose control. She was later to discover that his estimate of the number of diabetic amputations was far low of the actual number.
He provided her with a diabetic diet and prescriptions for oral medications plus insulin, syringes, and diabetic testing supplies, and referred her to the Diabetes Education Specialist at the local hospital.
In her Diabetes Education class she was taught things like: "It's OK once in a while for a diabetic to have a little bit of sugar on special occasions." The problem is that nobody could provide a working definition of three very important terms: · How often is "once in a while"? Once a day, once a week, once a month? · How much is "a little bit"? A teaspoon, a tablespoon, 10 grams, 35 grams? A small bowl of ice cream or a small slice of pie or cake? How big is "small"? · What is a "special occasion"? The great "feast days" of Passover, Hanukkah, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, and anniversaries; or whenever my blood glucose is below 150?
What Barbara wanted to know - and what nobody in the medical community seemed to be able to answer - was, "How do I eat so that I can maintain optimum health, manage my blood glucose levels within normal limits, and keep from being one of those people who loses their legs due to 'complications from diabetes'"?
Four and a half years later, Barbara lives insulin-free and is able to maintain her blood glucose levels at an average of 120 or lower. We have created a new section of our website to share the secrets of her success.

Debunking Diabetes Myths
|
|
Diabetes affects millions of American, and although we know more about it than ever before, there are still many misconceptions. To set the record straight, we're clearing up a few common myths on how diabetes impacts diet, blood sugar, and exercise.
MYTH: EATING LOTS OF SUGAR CAN CAUSE DIABETES. Not really. The exact causes of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are unknown, hut it's thought that heredity plays a role in both. However, you can develop diabetes without a family history. Viruses may also play a role in type 1 diabetes, while lifestyle factors, such as obesity, can put you at risk for type 2.
MYTH: ONLY CHILDREN GET TYPE 1 DIABETES, WHICH IS MORE SERIOUS THAN TYPE 2. Not true! Type 1 and type 2 diabetes used to be called juvenile-onset and adult-onset diabetes, respectively, but adults and children can develop either at any time. Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce enough insulin, which is needed for the body to use glucose for energy. In type 2 diabetes, either the body doesn't produce enough insulin or the cells ignore it. Both can lead to serious complications if left uncontrolled.
MYTH: IF YOU'RE A DIABETIC, YOU MUST FOLLOW A LOW-CARB DIET. Carbohydrates are not off-limits to diabetics, but they do affect blood glucose, so they must be limited and counted. Diabetics may need to eat a consistent amount of carbs each day or adjust insulin based on the carbs they eat.
MYTH: I DON'T NEED TO CHECK BLOOD SUGAR BECAUSE I CAN TELL IF IT'S HIGH OR LOW. Don't count on it! If left unchecked, low blood sugar can cause a diabetic to experience blurred vision, shakiness, sweating, and confusion, and even lose consciousness. Some diabetics experience these same symptoms when their blood sugar is high rather than low. High blood sugar is more difficult to discern without checking, but it can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and blindness.
