Gains on Uninsured, Reducing Shortages of Nurses/ Physicians, Health Care Funding Among Session's Successes

The Texas Legislature made significant improvements to Texas health care that will benefit consumers as well as health care providers. Small businesses and low-income individuals in the Texas High Risk Pool will find health insurance coverage more affordable, and college students will find health coverage more accessible. Texas nursing schools will be able to enroll more students for the fall semester, which will produce more graduates to ease the state's nursing shortage. Several measures passed that will increase the supply of physicians in rural and other underserved areas. And, lawmakers used federal stimulus funds to fill the shortage in Medicaid for 2009 and increase funding for Medicaid caseload and cost growth projections for 2010-11. Full Story.
Study Shows Consistent Use of Insulin Pump Therapy, Augmented with Continuous Glucose Monitoring, Results in Significant A1C Reductions

Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) today announced results of a randomized, controlled trial to demonstrate the benefits of an insulin pump therapy augmented with real-time continuous glucose monitoring (Personal CGM) versus a conventional pump and self-monitoring of blood glucose in type 1 diabetes patients with poor metabolic control. Study findings showed that patients who used Personal CGM more than 70 percent of the time achieved nearly a full percentage point reduction in A1C (average blood glucose levels). Full Story.
Genzyme Completes Transaction with Bayer HealthCare

Genzyme Corp. (Nasdaq: GENZ) recently announced that it has completed the transaction with Bayer HealthCare to acquire the worldwide rights to Campath®/MabCampath® (alemtuzumab), giving Genzyme primary responsibility for the development and commercialization of this promising multiple sclerosis (MS) therapeutic candidate. Genzyme is conducting two rapidly progressing phase 3 studies of alemtuzumab in relapsing-remitting MS patients. Full Story.
New Web site Eases End-Of-Life Planning for Texans

Less than a quarter of U.S. adults have spelled out end-of-life wishes in an advance directive or legally appointed someone to make health care decisions if they are unable to do it themselves. A bioethicist at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio wants to change that. Full Story.
