Baptist Health System Chosen by Medicare to Test New Approach to Health Care

Baptist Health System has been selected as one of only five health systems to participate in the Medicare "Acute Care Episode" (ACE) Demonstration project aimed at reshaping the way health care is delivered in the United States. Baptist was the only health system in Texas selected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to host the demonstration. Full Story.
Study Sheds More Light On Lou Gehrig's Mystery

Starved of a healthy diet of metals, abnormal molecules derived from families affected by Lou Gehrig's disease start behaving badly, becoming unstable and clinging to each other. Researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio made those observations after examining new 3-dimensional images of the abnormal molecules. Their work, which was published online April 21 in the journal Biochemistry, may shed light on what causes the disease in one of its inherited forms. Full Story.

David Hillis and Richard Lange, authors of two recent editorials in the New England Journal of Medicine. Midland Memorial Hospital is the twelfth hospital to be collecting life-saving umbilical cord blood for the statewide repository. The Texas Cord Blood Bank, a division of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, is a non-profit program established by the Texas legislature in 2001 to collect umbilical cord blood, which can benefit patients, usually children, suffering from a number of potentially fatal diseases.
