U.S. Hospital Use of Electronic Health Records Abysmally Low, Says New Study |
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Boston, Mass. - March 25, 2009Contrary to conventional wisdom, only a tiny fraction of U.S. hospitals have full health information technology (HIT) systems in place to improve how they deliver care, says a new study published in the March 26 online edition of the New England Journal of Medicine. A survey of nearly 3,000 hospitals shows that less than 2 percent use comprehensive electronic health records (EHRs), and about 8 percent use a basic EHR in at least one care unit that includes physician or nurse notes. Do Restrictions On Residents' Work Hours Harm Patient Care? |

Carney, MD, - Medical Economics - March 30, 2009For those physicians outside of academic medicine, the concept of "work-hour restrictions" may sound like a dream come true-or a nightmare. Or maybe a little of both. As of July 2003, residents may not be on duty more than 80 hours per week. They cannot work for longer than 24 hours, but do have an additional 6 hours to go to lectures or to the clinic (the 24 schedule). They must have 10 hours off between shifts and must have 24 hours away from the hospital every week. Full Story. |
