William L. Henrich Appointed Interim President of UT Health Science Center at San Antonio

William L. Henrich, M.D., vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, was named on Monday (Jan. 12) as interim president of the health science center. Henrich will succeed Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., who last week was officially named chancellor of the UT System, effective Feb. 2. Full Story.

Following several months of planning, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children's Hospital has added pediatric solid organ transplantation to its list of high-tech, high-touch services.  In collaboration with the UTHSCSA and under the leadership of Dr. Glenn Halff, kidney transplant services are now available as of January 1, 2009.  Full Story.
Evestra™ Signs Research Contract With NIH

Evestra™, Inc., today announced it has signed a contract with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to collaborate on the development of therapeutics focused on unmet needs in reproductive health. 

The agreement transfers Dr. P.N. Rao's long-standing contract between the NIH and the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR) to Evestra™, where Rao is now Senior Vice President of Research. He was Senior Scientist and Chairman of the Organic Chemistry Department at the Foundation before it spun off Evestra™ in April 2008. Full Story.

Caesarean Section Before 39 Weeks Raises Risk to Infant Lungs, Study Shows

For a healthy mother and baby, scheduling a Caesarean section delivery one to two weeks earlier than necessary slightly raises the risk of respiratory and other preventable problems in the newborn, and women should be counseled with this in mind.
 
That's the conclusion of a federally funded study conducted at 19 maternal-fetal medicine sites including The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  Full Story.
Genzyme and Isis Begin New Clinical Trials of Mipomersen

Genzyme Corp. (Nasdaq: GENZ) and Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ISIS) today announced that they have begun two new studies of mipomersen, a novel lipid-lowering drug in late-stage development, and a third is currently screening patients. These three trials will provide additional data on mipomersen in high-risk patient populations. The new studies, together with ongoing trials, will also substantially increase the size of the database of patients treated with mipomersen over the next 18 months. Full Story.
