Cigarroa To Leave UT Health Science Center San Antonio Presidency After 2009 Legislative Session

Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., recently announced his intention to step down as president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in September 2009 after appointment of a successor. Dr. Cigarroa, 50, was appointed eight years ago by the UT System Board of Regents. He became the first Hispanic chief executive of a comprehensive health sciences university in the continental United States, and has continued to practice his medical specialty of transplant surgery part time during his tenure as president. Society Study Finds Racial Disparities Increasing for Cancers Unrelated to Smoking

A new American Cancer Society study finds that recent progress in closing the gap in overall cancer mortality between African Americans and whites may be due primarily to smoking-related cancers, and that cancer mortality differences related to screening and treatment may still be increasing. The study, appearing in the November issue of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, is the first to analyze racial and ethnic differences between the two broad categories of disease. Hospital Medicine Groups Must Align Business Models

The Alamo to Turn Blue in Support of Ending Diabetes

The American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, University Health System, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, City, County and State officials join to turn the Alamo blue!
 
The Alamo will join the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Sydney Opera House and some 200 other landmarks across the world in going "blue" for the 2nd Annual United Nations' World Diabetes Day on Friday, November 14 at 5:30 p.m. Remarks at Alamo Plaza will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by lighting of the Alamo.
